Glencross (83) - Backlund (86) - Hudler (83)
Raymond (80) - Monahan (80) - Colborne (79)
Bouma (78) - Stajan (81) - Jones (78)
Baertschi (79) - Granlund (76) - Byron (79)
Bollig (74) - Reinhart (73) - McGrattan (75)
Gaudreau (78)

Giordano (90) - Brodie (85)
Russell (81) - Wideman (82)
Smid (79) - Wotherspoon (77)
Engelland (77)

Hiller (84)
Ramo (83)

So basically I think we're gonna have to make some drastic moves to build a good team in GM mode

Guessing.
I'm trying to find the interview with Rammer, but he mentioned that they have a company that does it. Most of the people that watch the games and rate the players are ex pro scouts so they know what they are looking for and how to rate them... or something along that line. Pretty sure Jobo could clear it up for us if he ever comes on anymore.

I remember it mostly because I was having a discussion with a friend on it a while back.

I'll keep looking for the article...

Found this one:

"Fun Fact #3: EA has a scout do the player ratings for them. So while many people (myself included) hate the fact many players in the game seem to be stuck around an 80 OV rating, it isn’t EA choosing this so much as a scout coming to them with his input."

Then this one too:

"When we ship the game, the ratings for all our leagues are provided by regional experts who provide us with ratings and potentials for every player in the game."

The first one is for NHL 13, and probably on. The second one is from an interview for NHL 12, so after 12 they went with a more independent guy it seems, yet he's still a pro scout so technically EA isn't doing the ratings as this guy is contracted to provide the input... don't know why I care so much, it's late and I knew I read it somewhere, I found it... I'm happy now and going to bed.

I do think your right though that after 12 it became more in house. Still the actual developers aren't providing the ratings so there is at least some unbiased input.

i hate EA ratings, as i have a general issue that the game doesn't feel different enough when the best player in the league has the puck versus when a minor league plugger does. in my opinion, generational talents (or about the top 5-10 players in the league) should be in the 90s, all other 1st line players in the 80s, 2nd line players mid 70s, 3rd line players high 60s-mid 70s, and 4th liners in the 60s. Naturally, the attribute ratings (offense/defense/physicality/etc) can range for all players, but the overall should be an apple to apple comparison.

With that in mind, my flames lineup:

Glencross (80) - Backlund (80) - Hudler (82)
Raymond (79) - Monahan (81) - Colborne (78)
Gaudreau (78) - Stajan (78) - Jones (76)
Bollig (73)- Bouma (72) - McGrattan (67)
Baertschi (75), Granlund (75), Byron (74), Reinhart (73)

Giordano (85) - Brodie (82)
Russell (78) - Wideman (80)
Smid (77) - Engelland (74)
Cundari (70) Wotherspoon (70)

Hiller (83)
Ramo (79)

I'd say this is the most realistic guess at the ratings of the Flames current lineup. Bollig will probably get a higher rating because he played on the Hawks. Hiller might be a bit higher as well. Other than that I'd say you're spot on.

I think Giordano should be the only one over 83 on the team. The team is absolutely full of guys in between 80-84 which is why we are so mediocre talent-wise

His point is valid though. EA needs to normally distribute these ratings with the league mean being either 75 or 80, and with a max of 95 for Crosby

Well if you look how CP has graded them, half the players are getting As and Bs.

Been playing be a gm in 14 lately cause i'm fiending.

Notables: johnny g is a 77 overall 4 red. Him and billy arnold led ahl in 2015 and he won the calder and richard in 2016. All that while not progressing a single point overall ><. Needless to say, expectations are not tempered.

Also I picked up reinhart 2nd overall and bennett 34th lmao.

Much like the NHL itself, EA wants parity. Certainly the Flames would be ranked lower and the Kings higher for NHL15, but for the sake of replayability, EA wants a game where a seven year old in Calgary who wants to play as only his favourite team has a chance to win.

Then change the difficulty?

I thought they changed how players are rated to correspond to the 'type' of player they are.

Being rated an 88 as a PLY (Playmaker) and an 88 as a SNP (Sniper) doesn't mean that both are equally good at the same things, it's a reflection of how good they are at their individual roles.

Or maybe I'm confused, I don't know. Following the above, McGrattan should be rated a 96 TGH.

IDK much about the actual ratings...but, it seems that some players (Crosby, Malkin, Ove) may as well be rated "GOD MODE"...in NHL14...Crosby seems to be able to steal pucks from 5 feet behind a guy who is pulling away...Malkin can make perfect passes out of being double team pasted in the corners...and I have yet to see Ovechkin knocked down, even when charged!

My big wish for NHL15 is to fix goalie AI, so that they don't lose tracking the puck when it is briefly knocked off a stick, and to hold the near post better on "swoop" moves coming at them. (also want to see the puck lost more on high speed stickhandles). I often play on XBOX live drop in games...Gamer handle: Targetdrone1957

Higher than that would be reserved for generational talents like Gretzky or Lemieux.

Now, everyone is ranked within literally 5 points of each other, yet in real life, they'd never be that equal based on a variety of reasons including skill, consistency, injury proneness and so forth.

A buddy of mine got a call a few years ago from friend of his that played in the NHL. The guy was complaining about his rating in the EA game. my buddy just hung up on him......

They dont do a total rating, they do individual ratings of specific stats and skills - like speed, endurance, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, etc.

Those individual ratings aggregate into the total rating you are discussing here.

The problem is that even though a pro scout might do the individual ratings, EA controls which ratings have the biggest impact (weighting) on the overall score. Speed, for example, has a significant impact on the overall rating, while fighting skill has little if any effect.

From a purely video game mechanic perspective, speed of the player makes a huge difference. So while this weighting system makes sense in some cases, I previously found it quite annoying with speedsters like Lombardi and Glencross who's "in game speed" had to be gimped because of the weighting the stat would have on the overall score.

To sum it up, Lombardi should have had one of the fastest speeds in the game, but couldn't as it would have made his overall score pretty unrepresentative of reality.
