Griesbach should definitely be a consideration for you.

If you can avoid river crossings, all the better. The only real traffic in Edmonton (aside from any created by car accidents) is due to river crossings. Also, lately it seems like there's always at least one bridge down due to construction.

Henday is great, except for the ridiculous speed limit, and the length of time they have been working on it by Sherwood Park.

I still don't understand why a hypothetical but reasonable festival-lover would prefer to spend summer in Edmonton than any number of other cities with more, larger, and better attended festivals.

I acknowledge that there are different strokes for different folks and that is great. It is entirely possible that someone, after visiting a reasonable cross-section of cities around the world in summer, concludes that Edmonton is the most enjoyable place for him or her to spend the rest of their summers. However, it is also possible that someone who happens to live in Edmonton would just state that it may be the best place to spend a summer just because they happen to spend their summers there. The former statement is perfectly fair. The latter statement is nonsense.

I suppose my point is that I prefer that someone say "I love Edmonton in the summer" or something rather than "Edmonton is the best place in the world to spend summer" if they don't intend to defend the statement in some objective, measurable way.

Anyway, I'm probably just arguing for the sake of arguing.

EDIT: Edmonton sucks in autumn, winter, spring, and summer.

I was apprehensive about moving here as well, but have enjoyed the experience overall.

I live right beside Whyte Ave and there is always something going on to get outside and check out.

Beware of traffic for the next while, as there is a huge multi-year construction blitz to get the roads somewhere approaching first-world status.

I've only lived in the Old Strathcona/Garneau area, but highly recommend it. That being said, I'm kind of an artsy type, so YMMV.

Garneau has to be one of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in the province, especially during summer. The U of A campus as a whole is just an amazing part of Edmonton to live next to.

Ya, you can easily get from St. Albert to downtown Edmonton in 20min. The difference between St. Albert and Airdrie is, unlike Airdrie, there isn't 10min of nothing between St. Albert's and Edmonton's border. The second you leave St. Albert, you're in Edmonton.

The Henday made me so mad, they were working on the northern section by St. Albert the entire time I lived there, until under a year before I moved away, last year. And I moved there in '06. Such a joke. But ya, now that it's finally done, it's so convenient from the bubble.

I live in downtown Edmonton, I like it.

I go to most surrounding suburbs via my job as a prosecutor. I hate St Albert more than any other community (white people problems, whining, too many speed cameras), Sherwood park has poor air quality and a lot of meth heads. Spruce grove and stony plain are fine but you can get backed up on the yellowhead for your commute.

Whatever you do, don't buy anywhere where you have to cross a bridge to get to work, it will double your commute.

I would probably look at Griesbach if I were you. Don't live on the southside if you're working on the north side. The henday can still get backed up, especially in winter. People drive 30km an hour in this city whenever there is a snow flake! it's maddening.

I plan to eventually move away from downtown to Blatchford when it gets built.

what? I've driven all over a Edmonton all different times of the day. Edmonton traffic is never "brutal". Unless you have absolutely nothing to compare it to.

Obviously it depends from where in St-Albert, but you can go pretty far around Edmonton in 20 minutes.

I do downtown edmonton to the courthouse in St. Albert in about 25 mins. It would obviously be longer the other way in rush hour.

It can take me half an hour to get down Whyte Ave on some afternoons. Traffic in Edmonton is definitely getting worse, especially with the million construction projects going on around the city. I can't wait until the LRT finishes up, since I'll try and use it much more often to save time.
