Calgary's weather problem is not that it occasionally gets to -30/40, it's that the wintery weather just never seem to end and goes deep into spring. Which is annoying/frustrating more than anything. But it hardly ever gets so cold that you can't be outside for more than a few minutes.

FAR less than 1. Less than 0.1.
As above, the number of days a year that we hit -30 is only 1 or 2.

Have you lived anywhere else in Canada? Saskatchewan was so cold last winter that SaskEnergy almost ran out of natural gas.
Calgary's climate is fine. Toughen up

of course it's an exaggeration, did it take your entire brain power to figure that out? My exaggeration was just a method of getting a point across. You've said nothing to refute my point.

Maybe so. But there are significantly more days when the temperature is in the minus teens or into the twenties but the wind chill takes it well into the thirties.

Just for arguments sake, this website provides weather details for 2013: http://weatherspark.com/history/2843...Alberta-Canada
I work downtown in a "non +15" connected building and go outside for lunch almost every day. I admit that I take the train or Car2go if I need to travel more than 4 blocks, but it still isn't that bad.

Your point was ridiculous as the other posters have pointed out. Your Canadian citizenship should be revoked for being such a baby.

so you're saying if there was no +15 , during the winter, downtown Calgary would be vibrant and bustling outside right? You're delusional beyond belief. Its very simple. When the weather is nice, people go outside, even during winter. When its bad, people will use the plus 15. To not have the plus 15 is idiotic. If anything they should expand it.

that is the future, not your hick 40 year old ways. Or maybe you think the people in Dubai should stop being such babies and just take the heat just like people in Canada should "take the cold". Give it up gramps.

Whine whine whine
What's with a few people trying to decide how calgarians should walk around downtown. Let everyone decide on their own if they want to use the +15 or not. It's tiring listening to a few people especially on this board try to make Calgary into a 500 year old european city at every corner.
I for one think the +15 is one of the best things about downtown Calgary. You can shop, go to a meeting between buildings, meet a friend from another building for lunch and it doesn't matter what the weather is. Let's be realistic, the summers are short in this town. There's also no question it can be faster and safer not having to cross intersections.
Lose the +15 and watch sales drop and business's close.

I love the +15! I do, however, wish it was more "public".

I can't put words in his mouth but I think he was suggesting that if there weren't +15s the services and amenities located on the +15 level would instead be provided at street level and therefore help provide an environment where streetlife could flourish with the proper conditions (e.g. weather, human-scale design, foot traffic, etc.).

By segregating pedestrians in their realm in the +15 and automobiles in their realm on the street, you start to create conditions that are hostile to any decent form of streetlife.

+15's are nice, and definitely warm in the winter, but I do agree they kill street life. Just look at Calgary's downtown after 6 PM - almost non-existent. Mostly all the shops are on the 2nd floor or mezzanine.
Take away the +15's, retailers move back to street level. Simple as that.

Things don't have to be at the +15 level to be connected by the system. For example, Redwater Grille.

Bleh - I'd put Redwater in the mediocre category. Sonoma Cafe is decent but not knock your socks off good (except for the mushroom soup which is to me).
6 years ago Submission would have had an awesome ranking from me but I haven't been there in ages...

Sonoma has gone downhill over the last few years. It used to be much better and much busier. I don't know if they had some sort of management change a few years ago or if something else happened but I wouldn't recommend it anymore.

I'd argue downtown being dead after 6pm is people leaving work and going home. +15s and street level are the same level of not busy. Most +15 level stores are closed by then anyways.
