I think this story does a better job of explaining what's going on here and why it's almost just par for the course at this point: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hea...nt-come-718757

Man Thor will be back by the time Avengers 2 is released. Just enjoy this take on the character for a little while.

I am fine with this change. Someone I know is fairly upset with Thor being a woman and suggested that it's simply lazy writing on Marvel's part. He suggested they should have just created a new series and used a female character from Norse mythology. I can understand that argument but they're obviously using Thor because the name alone will get people to buy the comic. That's a popular property that will have fans buying just to check it out. I imagine that establishing a following for a brand new character is a lot more difficult.
The whole argument surrounding this change reminds me a lot of the first Thor movie actually. People complained when Idris Elba was cast as Heimdall because "it's Norse mythology." Who cares? I think some people just hate change. I suspect this will end up either being a one-off or she'll spin off into her own series at some point with male Thor returning.
Edit: As an aside, I think she looks pretty cool. I'd rather her have the wings on the side of her helmet instead of those metal pieces.

So how does this rank on nerd-rage versus Starbuck as a woman?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe Thor was turned into a woman in the Earth X series. I think that was published in 2000.

Quite common for male super-heroes to be feminized. She-Hulk, Super Girl, Bat Girl, Spider Woman, Rescue (Iron Man), Shuri (Black Panther). "Male" Thor probably will return soon.
Previously, there was Thor Girl:

This model, Toni Darling, appears at Comic Cons:

Is there a female character in the Marvel Universe that doesn't have huge tits?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Refrigerators
Women in Refrigerators (or WiR[1]) is a website that was created in 1999 by a group of comic book fans and, more broadly, is a common comic book trope from which the website took its name. The website features a list of female comic book characters that have been injured, killed, or depowered as a plot device within various superhero comic books, seeks to analyze why these plot devices are used disproportionately on female characters.
