Apparently Red Deer has grown a lot recently and is near 100,000. Its funny because every time I drive through there it definitely doesn't have the 'feel' of a town that size.

200,000 truck nuts, eh?

There is a lot of growth through this region, I know that Sylvan has grown in the 3 yrs we have lived there, from 12,000ish to 13,500ish.

Personally, I'd rather live in a cheaper townhouse within walking distance to a ctrain station, and use the extra money I save in transportation and housing costs to travel or retire early, but I'm well aware 98% of Calgarians with kids don't feel the same way as me.

It comes down to where you are in life. In in the burbs now because for my kids. It is just a better place to bring them up. When they move out, I will move in. I will look for something in the beltline.

It drives me nuts reading comments from the hard core density people (SSP) about all the sprawl. Calgary is changing significantly from when I grew up here. Look at all the condo developments going on. We are finally developing better housing choices in the core and beltline but that doesn't mean the end of the burbs or that is should. People have to go somewhere and young families (for the most) can't afford to buy into places like Mission or Kensington.

The mountains are horrible! Bears, ticks & mosquitos... not worth the drive when you can enjoy the views right from Calgary.

Calgarians should spend more time visiting Red Deer, Drumheller and Vulcan. Did you know that Claresholm has an Appaloosa horse musuem?

Can't be understated. Every time I get the chance to come back from down east it is unbelievable how much growth the city/region is having. I am impressed the city is consulting/planning as much as they are on smart growth and the ways the city can learn to grow smartly as opposed to quickly. However I do believe it is a regional concern that Red Deer and towns like Lacombe, Sylvan, Innisfail and even Ponoka need to address together. As the mid-point between the major cities as they grow larger more people will be looking at Central AB as a place to settle in a "quieter" area. If the transportation links that connect CGY-RD-EDM improve (ie HSR, even 150 kmh trains, hyperloop, etc.) then I think you could see this growth grow exponentially.

If the region can come together and manage to offer the people of the province a big-city esque feel in a smaller centre I think the region could position itself well as a well-known place to visit/live.

No matter how many times I look at it the Bow building still looks stupid for our city. Just doesn't fit IMO.

Oh and you know your old when you remember the "husky tower" was the tallest building in Calgary. Maybe they should stop calling it a "tower" all together.

I remember when the Summit hotel and the Robin hood flour mill were the tallest.[IMG][/IMG]

I quite like it (The Bow). I agree it does look out of place amongst the 70's towers, which are all function and no form, but when your downtown and you see a lot of the newer buildings it does fit in. Some of the angles of downtown are more flattering than others.

The big thing though is that, any new buildings going up are going to continue to be more modern. Telus Sky being an obvious example. So as downtown ages, The Bow will look more and more 'in place'.

The alternative being, make everything look like the tiny windowed concrete ugliness from the 70's. It'd all match... but BLECH!

I think the Bow looks great set against the mountains (even if that photo is kind of BS)

Sure it sticks out, but that's because a good chunk of downtowns buildings are just brown crap. The goal should always be to elevate every new tower towards a higher standards, not bring it down to the level of the mediocre 70s. Once we get Telus and Brookfield in there, and keep adding more glass condos, the Bow will look a little more comfortable in it's surroundings.

Plus that angle is it's worst side, imo.

Lethbridge has grown by 35k from 59k in 1986 to 93k as of this year. Considering the number they gave here is for the whole Lethbridge area, not a reach at all.

You have to start somewhere. If they only allowed buildings that fit in with the ugly brown ones already there then we'd never have a good looking downtown core

The census released today says the city is at 1.2M. I was surprised to see Saddleridge as the fastest growing community
