You should stop comparing the people who think Burke did just fine to the people that voted for Hitler.

So ... which one is Hitler in this scenario, Burke or Cammalleri?
I got lost at the hairpin back there.

I think Burke is Hitler, we're all Nazis, and Cammalleri is Goebbels... or something.

Expand my horizons? Were essentially debating if Cammalleri had more intangible worth than a 3rd or 4th round pick. LOL.

In this scenario if Burke is Hitler, I'm guessing McTavish is Rob Ford.

Neither. The point is that we can question things and blind obedience to authority figures and establishment doesn't serve anyone any good .
That's what makes democracy great, despite that it is tyranny of majority.

Is the earth the center of the universe? Is the Earth flat? Are we the result of evolution? Should We have traded Cammalleri for a 3rd round pick? Was a 3rd round pick even available? Is there a God?

God damn, there is such an awful joke right there, but I'm not going to go for it.

Blind obedience when it comes to deciding if Cammalleris intangible worth outweighed a 3rd or 4th round pick. We are sheep.

Ahh life's important questions.
Where does a black hole go? Is time travel possible? Can we use it to get a 3rd for Cammalleri?

At the very least, don't be foolish enough to invoke Godwin's Law.

Just because it's the best deal at that time, doesn't mean it's a deal you should take. That's true in many facets of life. If you were a butcher would you sell an entire strip loin at the close of business on Friday for $2, as it was the best offer you had at that time? Would you take a job working manual labour in high risk conditions for $6 an hour because you didn't have a better offer at that second? Not receiving a 3rd round pick doesn't bother me. If it was a first round pick, that's significant. You also don't want players to know they'll be discarded for nothing, as that lowers the desirability of your franchise as a destination for free agents.
Once again, if people know they can lowball you all the time, and you'll end up taking anything, that's what they are going to do. You shouldn't look at a deal/non-deal, especially one as insignificant as this, as a one off. If a realtor shows a client 50 houses and they buy the last one, although they are earning their commission on the one purchase, it's not like it's a one off deal.

To me I'm fine with the non-trade.
I think Cammalleri was good in the dressing room, having that veteran presence would have helped to improve the young guys, and after the trade deadline we had a ton of them playing.
Look north to see what happens when you don't have any veteran presence in the dressing room to help shelter the kids.
If we traded Cammalleri we needed someone to be able to fill that role. Not necessarily scoring at Cammy's pace, but being able to play and help protect rookie minutes when needed.
When you negotiate you need to evaluate your needs and wants. What did we need? If we traded then we need someone to help shelter minutes, we need someone who is good in the dressing room. We didn't have anyone really to take those spots. We need someone to allow us to dress 6 or 7 rookies a night.
This is why I don't think a pick would have been a good return. We'd need a pick and a stable veteran (now this can be accomplished via multiple trades, trade Cammaleri for a 1st/2nd and then trade a 6th for a journeyman winger).
The other thing you have to keep in mind, and Treliving spoke to this point, you have to remember that every trade isn't done in a vacuum. GM's are not only evaluated by their fans and the media, they are evaluated by other GM's.
If the Flames have a reputation for taking whatever they can get at the deadline, do you think that we'll ever get fair market value on a trade, or 'win' many trades?
Sometimes you need a GM who says "Your offer is insulting, and if you want to go deep in the playoffs you need to give us X, otherwise I walk." And be willing to walk.
You know what's going to happen next year? When we're looking to trade every GM will be taking our team seriously, and not low-balling with take it or leave it offers. Garth Snow pulled the trigger on a bad trade, and is known for doing that. I don't want our guys to be doing that, I don't want our GM to be compared to Snow at all.
If our next trades are stronger because of this, I'll take the temporary hit, for long term strength in negotiation.
