Last summer I went to the San Fermin festival (where they hold the Running of the Bulls) in Pamplona, Spain. It's 9 days long, almost exactly matching the dates of Stampede, and even more party-heavy. It gets over a million visitors (compared to Stampede which should be somewhere around 1.5 this year) in a city about 1/5 of Calgary's size. On our way to the running, which begins at 8am, the nightclubs were still packed!

This has ALWAYS been a part of the Stampede...in fact i would suggest that even a few as 20 years ago there was much MORE of this behavior than there is now, particularly during the day.
No bars didnt open til 10 AM, but it was much more part of the daily routine to drink during work hours than it is these days. Of course it was still widely accepted that drinking and driving was a minor offense as well. Attitudes change about things, but with the Stampede it has forever been about the party and the events at the grounds, and always will be.

I guess I'm just not around the culture enough to pick up on the boozing and partying. Anytime I've ever gone to the Stampede it's to check out the market, midway, eats and shows. Ditto for everyone I know.

This is an interesting point of view, when you're walking through or even to the Stampede grounds, do you notice people acting unusually happy, sad, sick, loud, depressed, woozy, horny and energetic  , particularly people aged 16 thru 60?

When I was younger and first moved to Calgary, it was definitely about the weekend partying and those Bust Loose pub crawls that start at noon. Actually having to pay your own way in, standing in lines, arrange for rides or DD's etc.
Now that we're older and most guys have young families, preferance has shifted to the weekday corporate sponsored breakfasts and events.
Nothing sucks more than being in a meeting and getting drunk texts or drunk pics from your friends at 930am cause they are at Bullshooters or Doggydoo...
Just depends on your role and the industry you're in. O&G is best obviously. Lots of perks and events going on.

Ate the deep fried cheesecake last night and thought it was pretty good. Ate it like a burrito as suggested in this thread. They put a bunch of icing sugar on top, so be careful to not inhale the icing sugar while taking a bite like I did and have a cough fest.
Also had the red velvet mini doughnuts. They were pretty good as well.

The people present on the Stampede grounds before, say, 1:00 pm are generally not the same people who are present there at, say, 10:00 pm.
If you on the grounds for a full day, you will see the entire range of society, usually progressing from wholesome to debauched.
