Yes, we do rope calves. But never around the neck, always the hind feet.
And no - I know it doesn't really hurt them - that they are fine afterwards.
And I understand the love of rodeo.
But it's obvious why that event is a lightning rod.

Yes, I only drag in brandings by the hind feet but sometimes in the pasture trying to doctor a dodgy calf and a pi*sed off mama cow, getting that perfect heel shot in is not always as easy as 1 2 3. Or maybe it's just my sh*tty roping skills because I only pick up a rope when I absolutely need to.

Obviously it's going to draw public attention because it looks bad. It's just not as bad as it looks and I wish most people understood that.

Yeah, but the thing is, the calfs in the rodeo are locked in a little box and let out when the guy nods his head. There ain't no doctoring going on. The only reason it's getting a rope around the neck is for the entertainment of people.

I ate a part of a pig at breakfast, a part of a chicken for lunch, and possibly a part that calf's mom for dinner. So yeah, it's a little hypocritical to bitch about the rodeo, considering my diet, but it's bull#### (no pun intended) when the rodeo is presented/defended as some noble pursuit.

The animals are in the rodeo to make money for people. That's it. They aren't there because their owners love them so much, or because we need to keep people practiced up on handling them so we can get them to the veterinarian.

I'd love to see how the North American public would react if they knew how bullfighting works in most of the world.

Let's just say it does not end with some clowns trying to chase it into a pen

That's a tough fight for the animal rights crowd so they want no part of it.

Just like the environmentalist crowd going after the oilsands when there are far more worthy targets in other parts of the world.

... or some Canadians, for whatever strange reason, prefer to address problems (or things that they identify as problems) in their own communities rather than attempting to address problems, that likely can only be remedied by governments that are not in any way accountable to Canadians, in countries thousands of kms away?

Team roping is not a very good spectator sport.

Well as someone who grew up on a ranch and roped calves many times let me just say that I think bullfighting is complete BS and serves zero purpose outside of fulfilling a sick fantasy of torturing helpless animals.

Why not? Its the calf roping x 2 in terms of difficulty. Unless there was some rule change I don't know about.

Why is veal a bad thing to be eating? The animals get killed either way at some point.

Reality of the world we live in.

I think the rodeo would be much more interesting if the calf also got a rope and was able to rope and hog tie the guy on the horse as well. Even out the playing field a little. May the best competitor win.

I've never heard these arguments about rodeo before. Really, I haven't.

That's why I Air Quoted it. There is a stigma attached to it because its a baby animal. You rarely find rabbit on menues here in Victoria because people don't think you should eat it here.

Obviously some people enjoy it. And it is a fun hobby for some. However, if you really pushed to find out why they don't have it at the Greatest Outdoor Show On Earth. Its because the average person would find it boring.

The stigma is not so much that they are baby animals (lamb is readily available) it's that traditional veal calves are taken away from their mothers early, fed formula, almost starved to keep the meat pale in colour, and confined in plastic crates or tied to a wall shoulder to shoulder.
