I don't want pink stucco or cultured stone on the exterior envelope of our world class Flames arena. No thanks.

Or more like King has no idea what he's doing (because he's never developed real estate, especially of this magnitude, before), and thus things are going a lot slower than they should be. Pyramids have been built quicker than it's taking the Flames to even release a proposal.

That bridge should be burned, and the ground it stood on salted.

Ha. They both had a lot to say. Soap box forum was it called?
More my point about nenshi is that he has had an easy time of it so far. Flames haven't gone nuclear yet with request.
Thanks to Tyler for using google for me.

Yes....every team's top executive should have real estate experience or risk effing it all up.
I am pretty sure his is capable of managing and calling in experts as needed.
Tough to do these projects without PPP arrangement of some kind.

You'd think so, yet here we are years into the process, and from all accounts the city is still waiting to be approached with a proposal.

I don't think threatening to leave the city if they don't get free money would go over well with most Calgarians. What exactly would be the reason? Fan support here is some of the best in the league, corporate support here is abundant, and the current owners are some of the wealthiest in the NHL...what exactly would be the reason to leave?
This is not the 90s where everything was working against the Flames. Calgary as a city is at the stage where if the current franchise leaves, there would another one replacing it soon enough. It seems like every time there's an NHL team up for sale in the US, there's a Calgarian in the mix. I think there would be plently of oil egos wanting to get on that train.

Threatening to leave is a pretty empty threat.
Are the owners really going to leave one of upper markets in the league to go somewhere totally unproven like Kansas freakin City?
Ridiculous and everyone knows it.

It won't be that blatant. It will be the "arena is causing the team to become less and less economically viable" veiled threat.

A cautionary tale for Flames fans is what happened to the NBA in Seattle. The Sonics were well supported and deeply cared for, had plenty of wealth in the area and corporate support, also had a past championship and a winning tradition. There was a sense of entitlement and disbelief of the threats to leave among the fanbase and elected officials.
But, leave they did under a contrived league and (carpetbagger) owner mandated demand for a new building which the State and City refused to fund.
One advantage for Calgary is the local ownership may be more inclined to think of the team in terms of stewardship of a heritage brand than as a purely economic enterprise.
Still, in the end, if ownership can't make it economically feasible with an aging arena and have a choice between another jurisdiction's subsidized modern arena versus paying one wholly by themselves, I think you know which one they'll pick.

It seems like in the NHL, trying to get public funding is accompanied by threats to leave. Not always, but often. I wonder if Bettman would go to bat for Calgary like he did for Pittsburgh or Phoenix?
I didn't follow the Sonics situation, but did the NBA try to help them out at all?

That's the thing, they can, they just won't make as much money as they could with a new arena. It's getting the taxpayer to pay for the maximization of revenue of billionaires. Multiple multi-billionaires.
The Flames shouldn't go down the threaten to leave road, but I see no reason why they wouldn't. It happens everywhere else.

Where would the Flames move to and make more money than in Calgary? I'd bet the moment they left, there'd be another group in line, waiting to put a team right back here.

^^^ Commissioner Stern lobbied the State but the a new arena was politically untenable after the voter backlash of Safeco and CenturyLink while the bonds of a demolished Kingdome were still being paid off.
Howard Schultz, the previous local owner, didn't have the stomach to threaten and follow through to move the team so he sold it to someone who could and did with Stern's full blessing.
Google sonicsgate documentary if you have a couple of hours to get the full story.

I remember King saying once after he was hired that they would never go down the 'save the Flames' type road again. He wasn't in place for that, Bremner was, but regardless. He said the fan base had stepped up and now it was managements/ownerships turn to do their job.
Of course they will try to get as much as they can from the various levels of government. But I do think they know a 'hard sell' might do more harm than good.

Well that would be appreciated. And yes, I think if they tried to pull that move they'd burn down a lot of the good will they've built up in the community over the years. I really hope they don't, because I want to cheer for the ownership group alongside the team.
