Devils really didn't have a strong position to negotiate from.
They have no one in their system like Schneider. They gave up a top 10 pick for him.
They could not afford to lose him to free agency.

Paying for potential (Schneider) is still better than paying for name/past achievements (Miller), but $6M is a bit right for my blood, especially with that term!
He could make this look very good value by his small sample number extrapolating to a couple of good seasons of 60 starts and 30+ wins, but until he gets to that point, it is money for projected performance from a small sample, which is always a risk

Thought he would look forward to being a ufa. The Devils are not contending any time soon. The cash being tossed around like confetti I believe he left 8 figures on the table.

I am not following you here. He just banked 8 figures. You think he could have received more?

hahaha oh man. Of course he could live up to that contract, but holy moly that is an obscene amount of money for a goalie with such little experience.

Seven years? I don't know what counts for "elite" these days, but as far as goalies are concerned, I would expect something along the lines of at least a +50 games season to his credit, or 30 wins in a year, or some playoff accolades. Schneider looks like a good goalie to me, but nothing really sets him apart from the mid-tier.

I find it odd how everyone judges goalies so differently than players. Would anyone be surprised if the guy with the highest points per game over the last 4 seasons signed a $6M contract?
Yeah he's not 100% proven as a workhorse starter, but if Schneider put up those kind of numbers as a starter over 4 seasons his contract would be similar to Lundqvist's $8.5M one. If all he had to his name was one flash in the pan season I'd be inclined to be skeptical as well, but he's now had 7 years of elite play at the pro level including 4 years in the NHL. There's absolutely no reason to believe that he can't continue being a top goalie.
Now one could argue against giving goalies long term big money contracts, and I think that's a tenable argument to make. But if I was going to give one out, Schneider would be among the first I'd give it to.
|
I just don't think you can glance over the fact that he is 28 and only once played more than half of a season for his team (45 games last season).
I won't write him off. I think there is a chance that he can live up to it, but it's a pretty big risk too. This is like the contract the Flames gave Roman Turek back in the day. We'll see if the results are different I guess.

Yep. I believe someone out there would have paid 7.5×7 had he became a ufa. If Miller could get 6 then 7.5 is not a stretch.

At first look I thought the contract was outrageous, but looking at his numbers, they are quite impressive. You can point to his Win Loss record or number of playoff wins, but it's pretty hard for goalies to score goals.

To be fair he's never really been given a chance to run as a #1. But from what he's shown in his limited playing time, it's pretty stellar.
In the 143 game he has played, he has a .925 sv% and 2.12 GAA. That's pretty darn good. Even after being traded to the Devils last season, he was forced to split time with Brodeur. Schneider is going to have a lot to prove to live up to this contract, but if he gets to play top minutes, he's easily a top 10 goalie. I don't see why he can't live up to it if given the chance.

My problem with the deal is that the sample size—especially relative to the number of years he has now been playing—is pretty small. Quite a number of other comparable high end goalies in the same age range have accomplished a lot more for around the same money.

Agree that this is a bad contract, but this is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen written on this site.
They've won 3 Stanley Cups in 2 decades, and have appeared in the Finals 5 times. That's basically a quarter of all Cup Finals over the last 20 years have included the Devils.
If that's how not to run a franchise, I don't know what success is.

Using wins a the backbone to your argument on why a goalie deserves or doesn't deserve a contract pretty much demonstrates that you don't know goes to evaluate goalies.

And there's no question who if rather have locked up long term on my team between Schneider and Miller. Schneider is pretty clearly the better goalie and had been for a while.

I thought maybe the Devils have a lot of cap space but they don't, this will leave them with around $3M as per cap geek and they still haven't signed Martin Brodeur.
Schneider played in 45 games last season and will get a lot more starts this season.
Looks like the Devils will be using one of the 5 on their depth chart as a backup although 4 are still rookies. They may have to sign a back up if they don't re-sign Brodeur.
Maybe Joey MacDonald but I see he signed with the Canadiens, I didn't know that.
They might not be a bad team either this year with Mike Cammalleri and Jaromir Jagr back again for another season.

^ Brodeur is NOT going back to the Devils, I think that's all but guaranteed with where that relationship is at.

That is a ton of money for a guy who hasn't shown much at all. But I guess the Devils don't really have much else going on and might as well waste their money somewhere.

I don't think he was using it as the "backbone" of his argument. He said having 30+ wins in a single season would be a better sample size. That's the main issue here. The guy has put up great numbers, but in very limited sample sizes. Certainly hasn't shown enough to date imo to deserve a 7 yr $42M contract.
