Default Goalies - Customize Your Pads....

hey guys

i got some 'new' pads a few weeks ago. i couldn't believe the shape these things were in - almost new! i think there was maybe 12 puck marks per pad! either the guy who had them before me absolutely sucked, or he just didn't use them.

my only knock against the pads was that they were white with a couple of black stripes. my men's team colours are primarily red/white/black (with a little silver/grey thrown in) so i REALLY wanted to add some red to them so they'd match!

a buddy of mine had told me about a product called pad skinz (you know it must be cool becuz of how they spell 'skinz' - ha! ha! ...yes... i do realize how i spelt becuz ). so for about $60 (product/shipping/tax) i got some red material. it's like a leather/pad material with a ridiculous adhesive on the back.

so here's what the pads started out like....

i used green painters tape to get my templates, then just transferred the tape to the pad skinz material and cut it out

here are the before and afters....

blocker/trapper....

and the 'T' of the trapper. i really wanted to put a colts logo into the material but it didn't work. the embroidery machine couldn't handle the adhesive - it totally gummed up the machine and caused constant thread breaks

and here are the pads with our jerseys....

i'm really happy with how everything turned out and still have almost half the pad skinz material left over. i'm looking forward to getting on the ice tonight to see what my teammates think!!

and for those that are interested, you can check out pad skinz webpage here: http://www.padskinz.ca/home/

I've seen the Pad Skinz product -- seems like a neat idea. I would consider some "custom" graphics if you have some leftover material... Maybe a thin vertical stripe up the side wall, above and below the Reebok logo... Perhaps a little Flame graphic (like the forehead of the horse logo)... Or you can just send me the leftover

EDIT: Lame paint effort:

ha! ha! part of me likes the vertical stripe/#34 and part of me just likes the way they are. i'd totally send the leftover piece, but i want to hold onto it for any future stuff i might want to try!

Came across this thread and I thought I should chime into this, as I tried both padwrap and padskinz and I like the padskinz stuff way better. They're both similar but padskinz are lighter for sure which makes a difference to the feel of your pads. I also found that the padwrap stuff is "plasticy" and very firm. Padskinz felt more like real leather and was way easier to work with cause it's more stretchy and flexible. I read on the padskinz site that they were the ones who invented the stuff and have been around for 3 years. The only thing I liked better about padwrap was that it came off easier. Not sure if that's a good thing or not though. Oh ya, padskinz is a Canadian company too. Anyways, just my 2 cents. Both are good products but I like the padskinz stuff the best. Go Flames Go!

Off topic here and stealing your thread but what kind of Knee protectors do you guys use? I'm currently using the thigh guards that came with the pads and was told I should get an actual Knee protector so that I can move around better.

I was told that a couple months ago yet I've been too lazy to get it and this past wednesday I saved a puck shot with my left knee in the butterfly position and am regretting not getting it. Haha. What do you think of the G-Form Knee Pads?

these are the knee pads i use: http://www.goaliemonkey.com/reebok-g...rotectors.html

i like them, but the elastics tend to really stretch over time. the knee pads are still fine, they just don't stay up unless i tape them

i recently tried on a set of vaughns: http://www.goaliemonkey.com/vaughn-g...s-lt80-sr.html

they were rally comfortable and i'm thinking about getting a set when my current reeboks need replacing
