It will be interesting to see if McDavid gets picked apart for nothing like many of the super prospects who have been at the top of lists for so long often do.
I think you will (actually already seeing it) see many people start to wonder if Eichel isn't the top guy and point to really nitpicky things when it comes to McDavid.
The top 3 look strong but if we are going to be that bad I hope it is McDavid that we can get.

How does this draft stack up against the 2003 NHL Draft? I've been hearing it's a the deepest draft since over a decade. The consensus for now seems to be McDavid, Eichel and Hanifin as the top three... how big is the gap between those three and other prospects?

I think Barzal and the Swdish defenseman (Klington?) are also pretty highly rated. Might not be in the same class as the top 3 but those 2 are top level guys as well.

Every prospect in the top 10 had highly impressive seasons this year. Like draft year caliber seasons. I think we're looking at 8-10 players on Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett level or better. In fact that would be the second tier this year. First being (right now) Eichel/McDavid/Hanifin. It's a very talented draft and if we're even top 10 we'll get a stud, but one of the big 3 would be most ideal and would basically cap off our core for the foreseeable future.

I wouldn't even bring up the recent 2014 draft as a comparison for the upcoming 2015 draft. By all accounts Eichel/McDavid/Hanifin are head and shoulders above Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl.
The 2015 top group is supposed to be better than the 2013 top group of Mackinnon/Jones/Barkov etc.

It is probably too early to make any definitive statements about the 2015 draft.
However, the early indications and buzz is that it is going to be one of the stronger drafts in the last decade.
At this point I am just hoping for a good mix of defencemen being in the same tier the Flames will be picking.

It'd be nice to have 2 top 10 picks. top 5 would be jizz in pants worthy.

I said players at the Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett level would be second tier this year, and there may be up to 10 players at that level or better.
Didn't compare this year's top end to last year's.

That would require us to trade Gio or Brodie... Not really sure I'd want to do that.

If there's any year to "sell high" on a roster player for picks, it's this year.
Even for a late 1st, if we can accumulate picks in the top 60, there's a chance to move up and grab a second pick in, say, the top 15. Getting any team who looks to go top 10 to flip that pick to us would be incredibly difficult, though.

Just look at what happened in this year's trade deadline, not very many 1sts were being dealt anymore because GM's are starting to realize how much they are worth now. The only thing that you are starting to see is teams using their 2nds/3rds to move up a few spots in the 1st round, but not trading it away.

This 100%. Of course if a generational talent at forward is available you take him, but I think we are fairly deep at forward and just need a top pairing defenseman to complete our building blocks.
Even if the Flames are picking in the 6-10 range I think things will work out like they have the last 2 years. For some reason I'm not as stressed about picking in the top 3 for next year like in previous years.

We can also trade one of our budding forwards for some help on D

To be fair, I think we're a top line RW and top pairing D away.
Still not quite enough "top end" up front, yet. We're very deep yeah, but mostly on potential third liners with an outside chance of becoming second liners.

I am pretty excited about the defenseman coming up in this draft. Hanifin, Kylington, or Werenski as the Flames pick will have me excited.

All 4 of these are generational talents. Eichel and McDavid are going to be the absolute superstars. Whoever gets one of these guys is going to be set for 10-15 years. It's so exciting to watch.
I'm most intrigued by Eichel have never seen a player with his type of skill set. His first two steps are unbelievable. So strong on his feet with a fantastic passing ability. If he was Canadian he would be getting just as much press as Connor McDavid.

I see it in tiers
McDavid
Eichel
Hanfin
Barzal
Kylington
Konecy
Zacha
White
Strome

This upcoming draft is very strong. The best draft class in all since 03. McDavid and Eichel are probably the best duo since Ovy and Malkin in 04.
If we could do the same thing as the '13 draft by getting some late firsts at the deadline, you would get prospects as good as Poirier and Klimchuk.
It doesn't fall off right away either. Any picks in the top 90 should net you a good prospect.
