aw c'mon, Marty didn't even get his own 1 hour TSN special announcing that he was taking his talents to Broadway. you could call him disrespectful and ungrateful, but probably not as much egomaniac.
the biggest thing I remember about The Decision was Lebron, Wade and Bosh being raised up on a platform with fireworks and crap when they were introduced in Miami...followed of course by the "not 1, not 2...etc" speech. corny as a fat Spartan with a broken microphone to kick off a Sens game.
as a rough comparison, I wonder what the general sentiment was around Kariya and Selanne joining the Avs with Sakic, Forsberg, Hejduk and Tanguay in a similar attempt to stack for a cup. of course, there wasn't nearly as much pomp and circumstance, but I still remember thinking it was lame and cheering even harder against them. Luckily the Flames gave us all something awesome such that we forgot about the Avs that year.
The Decision was definitely ridiculous, but more people watched that stupid show than any Stanley Cup game in decades sadly. It also donated 2.5 million dollars to the Boys and Girls Club. The show generated 6 million in ad revenue ... I'm sure if they could do that with any hockey player, they would try to find a way.
The thing is most of these superstars makes the news outside of sports. You would have to tune out TV and commercials too to not know who they are. What about Bouchard, Raonic? And what about Suarez?? Or Pistorius?? They haven't just been featured in the sports section. I don't follow ANY of these sports, yet I know who they all are.

And nobody would be bugging you about how stupid it is to claim to not know, if you hadn't wasted everyone's time with your post claiming not to know. Sometimes BS needs to be called. So if you don't want to hear about it, next time don't waste everyone's time with such a useless post to begin with. Any normal person who didn't know about something would have googled the name, realized that they don't care, and backed away from the thread. Not come in here and try to get attention by claiming not to know.
Hahaha. Why is it so important that I somehow need to know who Lebron is? How would I know who Lebron is if I don't ever watch basketball. Would you also be shocked to know that I cannot name 10 NBA teams? Would you scream unbelieveable!? Well start screaming then.
Hilarious that people are so up in arms that I don't know who he is or what his contract is or who he plays for. Honestly seeing the over the top reactions was more entertainment than I could have hoped for. Certainly worth posting in this awesome thread. I also learned some things about the man named Lebron James.
Call your BS if that makes you feel better about me not knowing who some basketball player is. I still don't know or care who he is. He doesn't effect my life in anyway. I avoid other sports because I have zero interest in them. Like hate them. How is that so hard to understand? What does being a hardcore hockey fan have to do with knowing who a basketball player is?
In short, everybody can calm down, I'm pretty confident that it is more than OK to not know anything about the NBA.

Oilers suck.
I think the hockey equivalent right now would be both Kane and Toews together deciding that they were going to go to UFA and that they wanted to go to the same team for the same contract.
And then getting in touch with Ehrhoff and Marc Staal and convincing them to structure their contracts so they could play with Getzlaf and Perry in Anaheim. I think that would represent a similar impact to a team's roster as when Lebron and Bosh joined Wade in Miami, considering the disparate contribution of individual players to a basketball game's outcome to a hockey game's outcome. I mean, hell, you could put Lebron James on the Philadelphia 76ers and they'd make the playoffs in the East.
As far as reaction? If they decided to go the whole "The Decision" route, it would only be carried in Canada, and there would be much wailing and gnashing of teeth in each Canadian city that they were "snubbed" particularly in Winnipeg (Toews' hometown! Of course he'll come here!), Edmonton (We're building something special!), Toronto (We're the Maple Leafs!), and Vancouver (Rabble, rabble, rabble!).
Within the larger world of North American sport, it would rate about as much overall notice as Danica Patrick switching to Indy Car, ie: some, but nothing lasting.
Within the greater hockey commentariat there would be, similar to Lebron, those who condemned the decision (selfish! cheaters! cowards! disloyal!) and those who applauded it (clever! fierce competitors! it's all about championships!).
On the whole though, it's a pretty stupid question, as there is no "Lebron of hockey." There is no single player who has that kind of impact on the game, I don't think there ever has been ... maybe Bobby Orr? If you'd put Orr on the Cleveland Barons, would they have made 4 straight finals?
Hahaha. Why is it so important that I somehow need to know who Lebron is? How would I know who Lebron is if I don't ever watch basketball. Would you also be shocked to know that I cannot name 10 NBA teams? Would you scream unbelieveable!? Well start screaming then.

It's just incredibly odd. It's not even about sports, it's about a general awareness of mass marketed pop culture and personality. My mom knows who LeBron James in and she's in her 50's. It's just absolutely unbelievable that someone who lives in the US or Canada, with access to a TV or the internet doesn't know who LeBron James is. As a result it comes across, rightfully so in my opinion, that it's just a contrarian post for the sake of it.

How did you know who Justin Beiber was if you dont listen to his music??
Knowing who Lebron is has nothing to do with basketball. He's basically the biggest American athlete in the world right now. He's on commercials, in the news, magazines, everywhere. To not know who he is you'd have to not listen to the radio, watch TV, or go on the Internet.
Since you know who Justin Beiber is and you post on the Internet, you obviously do at least one of those things.
I don't know man, I'm sure you're just trollin and I'm takin the bait hard lol. Do your thing I guess, I won't ask anymore.
Would you also be shocked to know that I cannot name 10 NBA teams?
I can't name 10 NBA teams either and I know who LeBron is I bet I could name 5.
Out of total and sheer curiosity, do you know who Kobe Bryant is?
Edit: I can't even remember the name of Cleveland's team, even though I probably read it just yesterday in this very thread lol. I really hope they are the Cleveland Steamers. Still know who LeBron is!

^^^ While true, what MSL did to the Lightning is about as close to the same situation you're going to see in hockey. I would be shocked if any NHL player ever hosted a July 1st special on TSN to dance around in his new jersey with his new teammates before informing his old team that he had decided to move on.
I honestly can't think of a more dickish thing that could be done by a pro athlete that is done outside the competition arena and isn't actually illegal.
The 18-year-old superstar has been selected first overall by the team in the 1991 NHL entry draft. Smelling better opportunities outside Quebec, Lindros refuses to join the Nordiques, opting to stay with his junior hockey team, the Oshawa Generals. As we see in this clip, Quebecers are furious at the snub.
^^^ Yeah similar as well. But he didn't leave them with nothing, although I'm sure he didn't care one way or the other whether the Nordiques were compensated for him or not. LeBron took the Cavs pants and left them sitting on the toilet. Lindros told the Nords not to draft him and they did anyway.
IIRC LeBron left the Cavs shortly after FA began, while he was still in talks with the Cavs. So once he left he also left them without the chance to fill is role by either a) the draft or b) FA. Just an all around dick move.

It doesn't matter that you don't know, it's just odd you never heard of arguably the biggest name in all of sports. Do you even know who Michael Jordan is?

How in the world did he think "Tiger" referred to Tiger Williams?
