Ok, I get the Engelland posts because of the cap number, but people do realize this is an RFA signing and not a UFA signing, yeah? And that those are very different situations?

Maybe, but its a double trap for The Oilers.

If he sucks, or the team sucks, there's no way he's signing in Edmonton.

Because it looks like another weak defenseman pool next year, if He totally rocks it out, over achieves, kicks a$$, becomes a defensive god. The Oilers can overpay as much as they want, he's going where he's going to have a better chance to win and make some money.

Petry obviously wants out. He will be traded by the deadline if not before the season.

Petry is slightly less No Good than the rest of the team, tbh. Much less No Good than schultz.

Not a bad signing. Gives both parties options at the end of the year. He was their only NHL dman last year.

Yeah, but their best (last year) and now 4th highest paid with this contract. And to suggest the Nikitin or Fayne as good or better is a big stretch right now. He is obviously not a happy camper.
It is Edmonton - so surely there will not be a NMC attached lol, so he's gone at deadline, if not before.

Best draft in recent memory coming up? The Oilers decide to open their wallets and build up to a 10th overall pick.

They'll be at or around $66 million after J.Schultz signs and still no hope of making the playoffs.

If Edmonton wasnt in the league they wouldnt need NMCs, so why would anyone already in Edmonton either need or want one?

Nope, but mostly because you can't attach a NTC/NMC to a contract before the season that the player would otherwise qualify for group 3 unrestricted free agency. That's why you occasionally see guys traded before their NTC/NMCs kick in.

And still without any sort of even reasonable second line C (unless Draisatl is the guy).
Almost 20M on third lines (11.5M on the 3rd line, 8M on third defensive pairing), and locked up for some time.
There is no real way to improve that team, imo. They are stuck with what they have.

Think of it this way: If you're lucky enough to be traded away, you need the NMC so that you can't be traded back.

Very similar to last year when Edmonton was up against the cap. They expected that last years team was going to be a playoff bound team.

They thought wrong.

This years team is looking like such a miss match of throw away players (Poulliot, Purcell. Lower level guys being pushed into higher spots NN and Faye, and the rest of the mismatched stuff.

I can see the Oilers being slightly better this year, but not all that much better this year.

In this situation not really. Both are pretty insignificant players.

Which has nothing to do with the difference between negotiating an rfa contract and a ufa contract.

Actually there is a new clause developing up there. The NSC, otherwise known as the "No Stay Clause". Variants include the PTC ("Please Trade Clause") and BMM ("Bold Move Me", usually followed by ASAP)

Early indications are that the "WTFwasIthinking" clause isn't catching on is because for Oilers players, thinking isn't their strength.
