Are you kidding? you obviously don't have kids. Soccer is the best thing for kids there is. They burn off a ton of energy chasing a ball so they're not breaking your ming dynasty vases in the house and, it's a cheap sport to have your kid in.
Soccer and kids work really well.

I would watch more professional soccer if they did this.
Bring in instant replay for any foul. If a player is found to have taken a dive it is an automatic red card. That would get rid of that bull#### diving in less than a year. It is the only reason why I can't watch soccer.

Voicemail is a terrible feature that should have been removed from phones the minute better options were available. Does anyone like leaving or receiving them?
if you can't reach them just send a text or email.
*rant is not directed at you, just my dislike of voice mail.

I watch the Olympics for the best athletes in the world.
As far as the world cup goes, I have no stake in it, my country sucks at soccer. They don't dive enough.
The practice however is the future of a team I do have an interest in (financial & other) A team that competes in the best hockey league in the world, 82 games a year.

I would probably watch more soccer if they did a few things:
1. Make the games shorter (60 minute total.)
2. Make the field smaller (might need to eliminate a player or two on each side.)
3. Implement some sort of rules to generate more offense. Something similar to basketball in terms of moving the ball over half more quickly and not allowing passes back over half.
I know an important part of soccer right now is positioning and strategy but I'd be more inclined to watch if there was a lot more emphasis on strong offense and attacking the scoring zone.

Not to mention soccer has the highest participation rate in the country. Referring to it as child abuse is pretty laughable, even if you're being sarcastic.

I have played soccer, I played men's league as a 17 yr old (either first of premier division, can't remember to be honest). I know and understand the game.
You know that popularity doesn't equal good, right?

My kids hate soccer as well.

I have been to the UK, I watched "The King" at Old Trafford.
Still think the sport is garbage.

Nothing personal, but this is North America in a nutshell, and why they have trouble growing the game here.

The game is shorter than hockey or football. It is 90 minutes running clock plus two to 3 minutes of injury time so you are sub 100 minutes plus halftime. Definately shorter total running time than the 2.5hrs a short hockey game takes or the 3 hrs a football game takes.
Also if you watched the pool games in the world cup it was exciting soccer. The knockout has gone back to playing for draws and shootouts but in the pools the agressive attacking teams were the victors and the posession teams like spain and italy lost out.

Futball needs to have golden goal for OT. Non of this 2-15min halfs, even if someone score during extra time. Takes the excitement out of it all. Also take out the stupid offside rule. God I hate that rule. Never any breakaways and at least half the scoring chances are eliminated each game because of it.

I think soccer would be better if they introduced an off-side line (like a blue line in hockey) maybe at the top of the penalty area. After 90 minutes, allow free substitutions on the fly, until there is a golden goal. No penalty kicks. And crack down on diving. I also think the penalty for a foul in the box is too harsh - almost an automatic goal. And make the player that was fouled take the kick.

Yes, a 90 minute soccer match is completed quicker than a 60 minute hockey or football game but, at least to me, watching 5 minutes of a team pass the ball around behind the half field line with the occasional kick back to the goal keeper makes for a game that seems to take forever to complete.
In hockey, periodically you'll see a team waste time (the Rangers a couple years ago is a prime example) and the result is displeasure from the fans.

I think they should make the nets bigger and reduce the size of goalie equipment.

What grinds my gears is people complaining about soccer in a "grind my gears" thread. I can't stand the NBA or NFL, but you know what I do? I don't watch, and go merrily about my business without my gears being ground in any way.
"Grind my gears" implies you are actively being irritated by something, not just that it sucks. I might think someone is an idiot for getting excited about the Super Bowl, but if I went through life getting annoyed by other people liking terrible things, I would have a consistently bitter time of it.
