That explains everything. Like this reference, Oiler fans like to live in the past. Not only that, but they view their young guns as LeBron James.
Dirty, dirty, dirty.

If, and that's a big if, he still wouldn't be close to LeBron in terms of relative level to his sport and abilities.

I don't know about "pulling a LeBron" (I doubt any hockey player would create the attention he did) but I've always wondered which of our top young guys would sign somewhere else given the opportunity - that thought has always been in the back of my mind.

No one in the NHL has the impact that LeBron does. This would be like if Crosby, Toews, and Datsyuk all went to the same team and only took 5 million dollars in order to play together.
I still can't believe that someone wouldn't know who Lebron James is? He's probably more famous than Obama world wide.

I've heard of the guy, but prior to reading this thread I had no idea about his contract history, or even what team he plays for.
And now that I have read to the bottom of this thread and discovered little or nothing of relevance to hockey, I will go back to not caring about LeBron or basketball in general.
Bye!

Serious respect.

Yeah, I don't listen to sports radio when football is on. I change the channel. I don't watch a sports station when basketball is on. I change the channel. Cricket? Soccer? Darts? Baseball? Bowling? Change the channel. Zero interest.
I know who Tiger Williams is, he was a Canuck goon. Been out of the NHL for a long time. Still holds the all time record for penalty minutes in the NHL, a record that will probably will never be broken.
Brady Lamb is a defenseman that played for the Heat last year. Calgary kid that was never drafted, Flames signed him as a FA in 2012. Not sure about his contract status this year or if he is still Flames property. Or maybe you are talking about Neil Brady? I remember he scored the first goal in (modern day) Senators history but only ended up having a cup of coffee in the NHL all said.
I know my hockey. I live my hockey. I love my hockey. Those other sports aren't hockey so I don't pay any attention to them. At all.

Lebron is a huge name in the USA. He is nowhere in the ballpark of recognition to somebody like Obama worldwide. Probably not even 1/100th.

I've never really understood why people are proud of their own ignorance.
Personally, I would welcome a hockey "Lebron" back. It almost guarantees several cups and for me, that is more important than any perceived disrespect in the past.

Wow, you just skipped past the kool-aid and went straight for the powdered concentrate.
No, he is far from being the "best LW in hockey"
and to compare him to Lebron James is laughable since Lebron is a generational talent. You'd be hard to find anyone who's not an Oiler fan who thinks Hall is a generational talent
wait... why did i even bother typing that out? Do you even know who Lebron James is?

First, we have to draft McDavid next year, and he has to prove to be a generational talent. Then we have a few years to go before the team will win the Stanley Cup once or twice with him. So, let's revisit this scenario when it happens.

If it makes the team better I don't really care. It is hard to compare the NBA and the NHL. The NBA focuses so much on individual players. To have the same impact, it would have to a franchise player going to a hated rival. Like Crosby signing with the Flyers or Giroux signing with the Penguins (since Flyers fans are less forgiving). The closest thing in recent years was Iginla spurning the Bruins or Hossa going from the Penguins to Red Wings.

Some more insight for the people who don't follow the NBA and how much Lebron James was hated in Cleveland
Here's the infamous open letter that the Cavs owner, Dan Gilbert, had to say (subsequently fined by the NBA brass too)
Quote:
Dear Cleveland, all of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers supporters wherever you may be tonight;
As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.
This was announced with a several-day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.
Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.
The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.
There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.
You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.
You have given so much and deserve so much more.
In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight: "I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled former 'king' wins one."
You can take it to the bank.
If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.
Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.
Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.
This shocking act of disloyalty from our homegrown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow up to become.
But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.
The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.
Just watch.
Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day...
I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:
DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...

I guess it's theoretically possible to be a sports fan and not know who Lebron is, even though that would require tuning away from any regular TV or radio sports updates at the exact right moment for years.
but if you don't know who he is and can't be bothered to do a 2 minute google, then you have nothing useful to contribute to a discussion like this. it's like when someone posts news of a celebrity that passed away, and without fail there will be one reply saying "who is this person? why do I care?"
literally every single other hockey discussion thread in this forum is Lebron-free, so it shouldn't be difficult to take your posting talents there instead. I'm more interested in reading what fans with the requisite knowledge think of the question presented by the OP.

From unofficial conversations I've had with people in the know, I can say that the Calgary Flames are the front runners to sign Lebron. He is going to take his talents to South Beach Alberta.
Of course this isn't official so you can't quote me on it.

Same here... However, with the culture and identity we are creating, I am not sure I would want to leave the Flames. Maybe sound a little biased, but that's my opinion.

I never understood this logic here in Canada. You know it's OK to like other sports besides Hockey and Curling, they're not going to take your passport away. It's like when I tell people I'm a big College football fan they look at me like I have 3 heads.
I like how you threw in Darts, Bowling and Cricket in the same category as Baseball and Soccer. I'm surprised you didn't add Poker, Cycling and Ping Pong as well.
I mean either you're trying to be funny or you really are that ignorant but how does anybody who owns a television, whether you watch the sport or not, doesn't know who Lebron, Tiger and Tom Brady are? Maybe that one poster is right you really do live under a rock.
