Ya, he kinda proved, on the TSN broadcast, that multiple pull-ups were not a problem....
He doesn't float, he gets involved and plays a tough game and will be nowhere the weakest nhler.

I really don't understand all the objections.
The Flames knew, and everyone on this board who followed or paid attention , that Bennett wasn't NHL ready.
Not because of his level of skill or compete or physical play. He is just a kid who needs to grow, develop physically and put on muscle.
So why or what are we arguing about when that's what he is?

I really don't get the PM's=tough argument.
When Glencross and Bourque were taking all those dumb, lazy hooking and slashing penalties, did anyone on this board ever say, "man, I'm glad we have those guys, they sure give a fata about losing?"

Regardless of whether or not Bennett can put on 15lbs of muscle this summer, the fact remains that he is likely going to have to adapt his style of play for the NhL. After Gaudreau, Bennett is the purest offensive talent we have in our prospect pool, but in juniors he's played a very tenacious style. In the NHL he is likely going to have to learn to pick his spots when it comes to physical play to maximize his effectiveness. You can't help but love that he likes to get his nose dirty, but he already packs an assortment of offensive weapons and simply doesn't need to sacrifice the body as much as he does. This is what worries me about the prospect of him making the team out of camp this year.

When you have 100+ PIMs, we aren't talking about 50+ lazy hooking calls. There's bound to be fighting majors and/or misconducts in there.

What's the over/under on when Bennett starts shaving his head? His hairline is receding quickly. Happens to the best of us Sam!

I didn't try to say he was small either. People were talking about that before the pull up incident however. He's likely never going to be better than average size. I don't really think size is important anyhow, and centers are the smallest players on average in the NHL to boot.
I take a little issue with people saying he has a summer to build muscle, like that is going to drastically alter whether he makes the team or not. He won't go from boy to beast in 3 months. He will pretty much make it on the skill and ability he has now or not.

Seeing how most of the "toughest" players in the NHL have high PIMs.. there definitely is a correlation to it.

I decided to check out the Oiler boards for sh*ts & giggles after the draft. One of the more entertaining comments was something to the effect of:
I can't wait to watch Leon physically dominate that little Bennett
I laughed
July: the most wonderful time of the year to be an Oiler fan!

Roughing - 10 minors -- 20 minutes
High Sticking - 8 minors -- 16 minutes
Tripping - 7 minors -- 14 minutes
Cross-Checking - 6 minors -- 12 minutes
Slashing - 6 minors -- 12 minutes
Goalie Interference - 5 minors -- 10 minutes
Interference - 3 minors -- 6 minutes
Hooking - 3 minors -- 6 minutes
Holding - 1 minor -- 2 minutes
Holding the stick - 1 minor -- 2 minutes
Checking from behing - 1 minor -- 2 minutes
Charging - 1 minor - 2 minutes
Slewfoot Match - 1 major -- 5 minutes
Fighting match - 1 major -- 5 minutes
This adds up to 114 so I'm guessing I missed a couple of penalties or a couple of those 8 high-stickings were double minors. Regardless you get the idea, this kid is a mean, feisty player to play against who had points in 28 games he put up PIMS the same night -- 24G 30A in those games -- with 17 of those games being multi-point nights. He obviously is a different player when he is engaged putting up 12G and 25A in the 29 games he was not on the PIMs sheet.
Edit: He actually had 11 no points games, in those games he had 6 games in which he registered a penalty, all 2 minute minors. Still shows a more engaged player when he plays with that chip on his shoulder.

Thanks for this. Ha I guess we had the same idea this morning - I just finished adding it up and the only difference I got was one more rough and one more high stick - so regardless, close enough.
Your description of the player is perfect

Yeah, we all knew he was truculent. All in good fun though!
It's still kinda funny because we basically just measured the rubber content of a tire just to confirm we're looking at a car.

All you have to do to be convinced that Bennett is a ####-stirrer is watch some game footage. He does take some bad penalties, but he has an active stick that creates scoring opportunities, too. He can be lazy defensively at times, which is not unusual for a 17 year old. When he's engaged he creates turnovers all over the ice. One thing is certain though, his offensive skill and creativity has not been oversold. He is a marvel to watch and routinely creates goals out of thin air.
I've also watched quite a bit of Dreisadtl, I was veryhigh on him going into the draft and thought he'd be more likely at #4 than Bennett. He is not a very physical player, but he does use his big body well to protect the puck. He has Kopitar-like ability to maintain puck possession. Many of his goals last season came off a one-timer, and while he has a great shot, those kinds of scoring opportunities in the NHL will be few and far between. He'll need to improve his creativity in the offensive zone to truly succeed. If he doesn't, he'll be easily shutdown by even the weakest of defenders in the NHL. I also don't see him developing a phsyical edge anytime soon.
