I think it is pretty cool, but kind of negates everything they fought for in the other movies?

Spoiler!
I don't know if it does, does it negate the rule of two, not really, in the spoilers, it was pretty clear that these jedi hunters aren't Sith but would like to see the Sith return as they worship them like gods. I've always argued that the Sith line died with the deaths of Palpatine and Vader, there were no other secret apprentices out there unless you lived by the EU in which there were hundreds. These Jedi Hunters aren't even craving power or revenge, they are craving a return to a former state of government.
Now I'm going to have to see how they're going to bring back the Sith if that's going to happen. I would hate it if they bought back a long dead Sith Lord like Plageous or Sideous, to me that would be stupid, because frankly one of the things that I absolutely hated was the whole Sith ghosts. Jedi Ghosts are in canon because they are willing to sacrifice themselves and let go and selflessly return to the force. The Sith couldn't do it because frankly they did everything they could to avoid actual death and they refused to be sacrificed or let go of their life.
But if its a seduction of a current force user by a holocron promising them power that would be something else, but it would take years for a new Sith to become powerful and trained that way.
If I was going to write it, have the Jedi Hunters killing Jedi left right and center, and leave a small group alive, maybe Luke and Leia and a couple of apprentices. Luke finally faces the Hunters and dies horribly, one of the apprentices in a fit of rage and desire for revenge, starts hunting the Hunters, he knows he needs power and goes to Korribond or Moribond and finds the Holocron of Darth Sideous and becomes completely corrupted, and desires power over revenge and joins the Jedi Hunters and the Empire. The other Apprentice takes of the mantle of Jedi Master and becomes the lead in the second movie.
As well what they were fighting for wasn't neccessarily a new republic, or a return to the old days, that's an EU creation, they were fighting to get rid of the current government, who knows they might have wanted to replace it with something worse, like a theocracy with a Jedi at its head.
What the movie was really about was the Skywalker story, and I think this trilogy of movies has to draw that to a close.

I am not sure how I feel about this turn. Rather dark and bleak and smacks into the face of what I think Star Wars is about.
Empire strikes back and return of the Sith and even attack of the Clones were all pretty dark movies at their heart.
You could even argue that the end of Jedi was dark because while they celebrated that night, with the destruction of the death star the rebel scum would leave the planet the next day and the Ewoks would be left to a wrecked planet due to the destruction of a moon sized metal structure in their orbit.
A new hope was a positive ending but there was the underlying theme that they hadn't beaten the Empire and that outside of Tarkin nobody major had died except for 100,000's of innocent civilian workers on that station and slaves. You knew that the Empire would retaliate.
Yup the whole Star wars 6 film series was pretty damn grim.

I get the feeling that Abrams isn't going to stray too far from the familiar, if his Star Trek films are any indication. There might be some nods to EU themes, but I doubt he's going to explore those in any great depth. I'd speculate it will be about the tribulations of rebuilding of the Jedi council on Corruscant, and scouting for younglings who he and Leia can train. I assume Leia would be his first apprentice, and they would go from there.
I would think stumbling upon a dark planet, would be the wrench in his plans and create the conflict for the movie.

I guess I've been tainted by the EU, I've never thought that Leia would become a full fledged Jedi, I'm pretty sure that if they were to re-establish a republic, the last thing that the people would want would be another force user as the head of the Republic. Especially when it got out that Palpatine was a evil force user.
As it stands, I could see why people wouldn't even want the Jedi to have a hand in a new republic. Every war in that galaxy seems to come down to the eternal war between the dark and light side of the force.
Most people would want to thank Luke for getting rid of the Emperor and then tell him to piss off as they had work to do establishing a democracy.
Its not that I don't mind the idea of a dark planet, I always thought though that it would be a poor reason for a fall to the dark side.
I would think that JJ isn't going to re-invent the wheel at all. I think we're going to get a not main villain in the first movie, the fall of a established in the first movie character in the second movie and a very dark ending (Luke gets run through with a light spear) a battle for redemption in the third movie.
Wow totally sounds like something that Supershadow would say (If you don't know who Supershadow is you need to look him up, he's a key point in Star Wars fandom gone wrong)

And Tom Cruise with Val Kilner on his wing.
Too bad Porkins died. He would have made a good Porkins at this point in time.

Ah Porkin's I'm sure that there were a lot of pilots that were relieved that he was splattered over the Death Star, it saved them hernia's if they would have had to carry that casket.
Just reduce his role. If they're going to return SW to a gritty western space story, have him with a metal leg or something, in a floating chair. He can still captain the Falcon and whatnot.
Tom Cruise would make for a fun cameo. Maybe as a mercenary/bounty hunter type role.

And lens flairs. Thousands and thousands of lens flairs.
JJ's Star Trek productions showed that he's not concerned about the legacy of a franchise, but looks to make a whiz-bang popcorn movie that's satisfying in the moment to the broadest base but has little in the way of lasting depth or thoughtful themes.
Dragging back every old actor from the original and filling it with countless cameos says to me he's more concerned with the opening weekend box office than setting a base for a whole new Star Wars that does justice to the original two movies.
