Listening to the channels is not illegal, but disclosing to others what you heard is. This is why media can listen, but can't report on what they hear. They have to find the facts themselves, they just use what they hear as a tool. Even in HAM radio, the conversations are deemed to be private and is illegal to disclose them to anybody else, even though anybody could hear it with the right equipment.

It's legal to stream it on the internet (and Airdrie RCMP radio is indeed available for stream) so essentially you're absolved from any legal repercussions as the "information you have" could have simply come from someone who transcribed it.

Again, listening to and making use of a communication are two different things. Listening to an online stream doesn't absolve you of any legalities.

This is something I've come across numerous times now as I used to run a scanner in Red Deer for the RCMP. It all stems from the Radiocommunications Act 9.(2).

But yes, people still do it and don't get in trouble. My point was though that this guy is professionally connected via the search association, with access to actual service radios likely. He should have known better to divulge information publicly that was not meant to be. That's my whole point, but if you want to discuss legalities of internet feeds of scanners, feel free to PM me.

Police are also cracking down on media. Have warned them if they go past the fence, they will be arrested and charged with trespassing.
