Why they did it? Well it's pretty much all speculation, but interesting nonetheless

As for reason, I believe they went out and found the most truculent player they could find in order to intimidate the opposition, and allow our smaller players room to do their thing. Personally, I don't like these types of players unless it's combined with elite skill e.g. Brown.

The GM gave the reasons he did it a number of times.

When we're so low on the cap, who cares what his salary is? Lets the kids develop in the A for a year or 2.

Unless they want a good cracked at McDavid.
This team could spend to the cap.
Try to sneak into 10th place.
I'm not sure that's a good direction though

Totally agree, just that this signing seems like "how can I spend money that won't make us competitive, but not hurt our young players' development?" I fully expect him to make $2.9M eating popcorn by next year

I was completely disappointed with SOB last year. The sell was that he was going to provide grit. That may have happened during one game. I am hoping that Engelland is uber motivated by this overpayment that he does not disappoint in this area. My fear is that he tries too hard to earn his pay and takes bad penalties. I'll remain positive until he plays a few games as I would with any new player regardless of their history.

Thanks for those. Engellands aggressiveness in those hits has been so missing from the flames. Dumb contract or not, I will enjoy it.

There is a 20 min interview with Conroy on the Fan960 website right now. You guys should listen to it. Connie says something along the lines of they are being careful not to sign too many players in order to leave room for the kids to have a shot at the roster. Also talks about Engelland.

I agree. There's tons of talk around here about how much people hate the Oilers, but not nearly enough ill will towards the Canucks.
Both teams deserve a serving of Engelland.

Add Sieloff to the mix and it should be a lot of fun to play the Flames. And I think the indignation at this signing is great. Engelland with a chip on his shoulder and motivated to make people swallow their words means some long awaited fireworks.

If he has a rough year he'll be a huge whipping boy.
Really hope that fans can forget about his salary and give him a fair shake as a Flame.

Sadly Engelland wasn't ever going to get a fair shake by some Flames fans because he has too things going against him... he's truculent and he can't dangle

I can't imagine Seiloff will have any effect on anyone playing the Flames, at least the Calgary Flames. He needs to work on showing he can make the Adirondack Flames.

Yup, he has already been Butlered by many (hated before even playing a game because of hockey business and not hockey playing).

Except he had already made the Calgary Flames out of Training camp while he was still eligible to play in the WJC. And then the freak injuries infections happened.
