I would try to entice both of them with a long term in lieu of yearly dollars.
Hedman received a 5 year deal with an average of $4 million per year (a peak salary of $5.75 million in one of the years). How would that be for a comparable to Brodie?

Matthew Perreault just got $3 million.
$3.5 would be the high end.

Artem Anisimov has had a more consistent production and has a cap hit of $3.3. The only thing consistent of Anisimov is his inconsistency.
1st UFA contract, broke 40 pts once, declined his next 2 seasons in ppg. And rebounded slightly AFTER signing his new deal. But his deal was signed on the down slope. An argument for a comparible could be made but I feel Backlund has a higher ceiling and will come close to 50pts this season, dramaticly increasing his stock for either trade or a payday, or both.
Matt Cullen $3.5 million 4th UFA contract, 37 yrs old, consistant 40 pt guy. Peaked out (obviously). $3.5m
Andrew Cogliano $3 million. 2nd UFA contract, 3 yrs older than backs, best yr since 06/07, finally broke 40pts again. gets you $3m/yr. Has peaked and signed as such.
Matthew Perreault just got $3 million.
2nd UFA contract, has had a nice ppg, relatively unknown commidity and ceiling very unknown. Paid based on not knowing what to expect, imo. Could defenitely demand more money now since he has shown increased production every year. Was signed at the right time IMO. Good Value contract.
To summarize... Guys have never been paid so well as they are now. Backlund has jumped through some hoops for this organization and shown he can handle the ups and downs and is showing he is on an upswing. I cant see him taking any less than a $4m x 4yr from the Flames. And again, that is good value. But you cannot handcuff the team with a NMC. You have to be able to move a body when the younger guys are ready.
And in 2 years, with a Backlund hitting 50pts consistently, being paid $4m with 3 years left on the deal, you are going to get atleast a 1st in return, ikely a 1st +, hopefully a 1st ++.
Contracts are only going up boys and girls, get him under a good deal now while you can. Even if that means paying him slightly higher than his production group. Pay more now, save more later.

Using that logic..Brodie would be making 1.48 million more then Giordano.
Giordano > Brodie

As already mentioned in this thread
Hedman 5years, 4.00 AAV
Voynov 6years, 4.17 AAV
I understand both these started last season, but they seem like reasonable, direct Brodie comparables

A 5 or 6 year deal for Brodie would involve more UFA years than those contracts. So I don't think a 4.00 AAV will be enough to get it done.

Backlund has arguably the best lettuce in the show. i'd give him 5mill a year for that very reason.

From my POV no urgency to get Brodie done just yet. I'm very appreciative of what he's done, but even if he goes to RFA, we don't risk losing him for nothing, and we can still take the risk of arbitration without him going UFA after.
Backlund is a bit more complicated. His valuable stats don't necessarily translate to arbitration, and yet, there is such a demand for centers, even average centers. I look at Tyler Bozak's deal as the biggest comparable.
I would wait until the new year, to make sure Backlund isn't just a one year wonder offensively, and health wise, then offer a team friendly 3yr deal between 3.5 and 4m/yr (settling at 4m/yr at worst) over 3yrs. At best he's Statsny (3rd center left out, because so many better ahead of him. At best he's around for awhile on a club friendly deal for a while. If we start being overly generous right now with Backlund, we are going to have serious problems with Monahan and Bennett going forward. And let's be real, Backlund hasn't had a healthy season until this last...
Even if we lose him (after next season), for nothing, we should be deep enough at the center position to replace him.
It's not quite as desperate as the oilers giving a big contract to Gagner for scoring an 8pt game, but paying 20m to Backlund now stinks of desperation.

He did improve, but he also played top line minutes the entire year (The CP apologists used this as an excuse for 4 years prior). He did end the year with a small nagging injury that he seems to be quite prone for.
As I've said before, when the games matter, the first 20, hopefully 40,60, even 82 (while were alive in the playoff race) this is where you judge his performance next year. Going PPG at game 60 when this team is 20 points out of 8th and the teams were playing are overlooking us (tossing in a backup goalie for good measure) is not a good gauge.

Okay WhereruChrisO'sullivan, I'm going to ask you to do one thing for us. I'll accept that you don't like Backlund and that you don't think he'll amount to very much, but please just do one thing for us, as you have been pushing for it for years, but have now removed it from your sig.
Just admit that you no longer think Michael Backlund is destined for the KHL. Please, for our sanity, admit it. Not in '13, not in '14, not in 15'. Just admit that he is an NHL hockey player at this point.

Seems unlikely under this CBA.
