Considering that would mean that we'd be peppering the other team with shots... yeah it would be beneficial to us. C'mon Oilers sign Butler, Pretty Pretty Pretty Please sign Butler.

Not sure why so many look at this stat as a good thing. With the ice time Butler had, it's most definitely a terrible stat to be 2nd in blocked shots. If there was a stat that tracked shots faced while player on ice, Butler would be 1st in the league.
Good on him for shoving his body into his mistakes, but the amount of turn-over's he gave up with the Flames would be great to see with the Oilers.

As someone else pointed out, Butler blocks some shots but a bunch more hit him. There is a difference.
It would come as no surprise to me if he were to sign for league minimum or over in the KHL.

This.
If Butler were a better defenceman there wouldn't have been so many shots for him to block!
I wish him the best, though.

Last season the Flames allowed more than twice as many goals as they scored with Butler on the ice (86 GA / 42 GF).

His thread is a clear example of how some here over value players on the Flames. Butler wasn't good for us and isn't a good option or he'd be signed by now. Sure, he had a lot of blocked shots but the other team was allowed the shots because of him. This team needs to move forward and make changes , not signing Butler was a good move
Now if someone started a thread about signing David Moss, that would be good...

If he could've broke even and went 42 GF / 42 GA instead, the flames would have a +8 goal differential as a team...

You are seriously using that he isn't signed by July 4th as the premise of how Butler wasn't good? What a ridiculous premise. All it means is that he hasn't accepted an offer yet, for all you know he has half a dozen offers on the table and is mulling them over.

I think it's safe to say if Feaster was still here we would have signed Butler by now. Maybe Tampa will sign him..

If that's the case there must be a lot of teams going for McDavid.
A soft defenseman who can't play defense and doesn't put up numbers, he's not going to generate much interest. At 28, he's getting past that point where some team might look at him because he's decently quick for a 200 pound player and has shown flashes of offensive skills. The problem is he can't utilize those skills under pressure and he's too often under pressure because of the mistakes he makes. Maybe an East team that values mobility will take a look at him but this will be his last NHL contract if he gets one.

Like in Europe or the KHL? I tried hard but I'm having trouble coming up with six teams that he'd be a good fit with in the NHL right now. I don't think he slots in to the depth chart of a single team in the west. Plus it sounded like he wants to be closer to his hometown of St. Louis. In the east, there's what? Carolina? Florida?
He's in a real tough spot. He doesn't figure into a contending team's depth chart. Bubble teams have already signed their hyped FA guys to make the push (see the Washington Caps) and rebuilding teams would rather save a spot for a kid coming up.
I'm really interested to see where he ends up.

I'm not saying he has offers or doesn't. I am not saying he was good or bad. I am saying we don't know what offers he has received so using not being signed by July 4th as the reasoning for him being bad is simply illogical.

Fair enough. I agree that there are more empirical forms of evidence of his being bad to turn to.

Having more picks, even if you can't sign them all, gives you a better shot at good players. The Flames screwed up that advantage, but it is an advantage.
Having said that, you make a pretty good case for trading up with excess picks, if we're getting 12 picks per year.

Not that Chris Butler had a good plus minus. players that get PK time and no no PP time will always have a negative Goal Differential. That's why +/- doesn't include special teams.

Historically, those UFAs that are considered hot commodities are signed the first day of Free Agency.
After that first day, the pool shrinks drastically...5 days after, well, there's not much left...guys like Butler? Teams do not wait on guys like that...

The occasionally reasonably good free agent doesn't sign immediately
