Totally agree. Clarke was talented and tough enough to back himself up, but he didn't need to at the time. If you went after Clarke you immediately had to answer to any of the other guys, which is what I see happening currently with the Flames in having McGrattan/Bollig/Engelland etc.

I also remember watching Clarke play as far back as Flin Flon.

I believe that is correct - think he also mentioned that his #1's first name was not Sam. Understandable why he wouldn't admit to that though - good to see he's able to pull a fast one on the media when required... sometimes seems like he could reveal too much information if not careful.

Did he mention that? I thought Conroy was asked if the player he wanted and the player Treliving wanted shared the same first name, and he didn't give a clear answer to that.

Technically Samson and Samuel are not the same first name, so even if he said no we still wouldn't be able to tell.

Considering the amount of toughness that has been added of late I wouldn't be surprised if the Burke/Treliving blueprint for this franchise was the 70s Broadstreet Bullies. Seventeenth Ave Sluggers? MacLeod Trail Meanies?

Bennett is the kind of player you build a franchise around. Add him to Monahan & Gaudreau and there's a potentially elite core of offensive talent. Surround the core with hard-nosed top-6 forwards like Poirier, Klimchuk and Hunter Smith. Fill the remaining lines with shut-down 2-way talent (Bouma, Backlund, Colborne, Arnold & Reinhart) and beef. Factor in wild cards like Baertschi & Jankowski who could make a top 6 impact and I think you have to wonder if the Flames young forwards corps will be one of the strongest in a couple of years time.

I know agree if we're really lucky and everything goes our way this could happen! It's hard not to be excited for the future forward group of this franchise. Throw a couple dmen in there and we could be in good shape in a couple of years.

Yeah, I'm thinking a speedier version of the 70s Broad Street Bullies with Bennett as our Bobby Clarke. I like it!

I love how our drafting has been so much different than the Oilers.

They've drafted players with high end offensive upside but are seemingly one dimensional.

Calgary now has two centres that can put up points but are both known for their two-way game (I think Bennett will put up more points that Monahan but they both will be an awesome 1-2 punch).

Even Gaudreau with all his offensive prowess prides himself in the defensive zone.

That is the key to becoming an elite team. Yes you need highly skilled offensive players but you just as importantly need guys who play 200 feet (Ie: Chicago, LA).

That's the reason why Burke wanted Beartshi down in the AHL to learn how to play all 3 zones and in a few years I think we will all be really happy he did.
