This contract definitely has a "Show Me" feel to it. If he can play 82 games with the Flames this year the way he played the final quarter of last season, he will be a legitimate full-time NHLer and will be looking at a bigger term and dollar next summer.

are people honestly worried about the Flames having too many NHL players?
really?
no really?
competition is good and as usual there will be a ton of injuries

As for the arbitration case, clearly the Flames didn't think he was going to be worth the $ that potentially could be awarded, so the rolled the dice, cut him loose and then offered him less on a one year contract...
I am sure this won't be a popular opinion, but whatever...

I think management thought very highly of Byron's abilities as a player and realized that would get him a sizable contract through arbitration, but they thought he might be worth a little less to the Flames than to the average NHL team based on the big and t r u c u l e n t (good luck finding that one, sun ) team that we're trying to build.
I think the fact that he got re-signed proves that Flames management appreciates what Byron brings to the ice and/or to the hard-working culture of the team. Either way, I'm glad to see him back.

Good to have him back. Have always wondered how much he would be ahead if he didn't get injured 5 minutes into his call-up in Hartely's first season.

Good for Byron. If anyone epitomizes truculence, it's 32. That guy plays like he's 6"8. Dynamite on the PK too; has it in him to be a smaller Helm.

There were times last season where Byron was the best player on the ice, and it wasn't even close. His speed, offensive instincts and tenacity have really developed.
I love this signing. I hope he proves his doubters wrong once and for all this season.

I could be wrong, but I believe that Byron will still be an RFA next year if the Flames tender a qualifying offer. I don't believe their failure to tender one this year does anything to cancel their rights next season and he will still be under 27 with fewer than 7 years experience.
I assume that's one reason for the one-year deal.

Or, he's the small LW forward in the lineup while Gaudreau spends a year learning to be a pro in the AHL

Hopefully that's true.
That would be convenient if Byron proves himself a good full time NHLer.

Too bad that brutal Engelland contract is going to cause Byron to get 5 million!

21 pts in 47 games is pretty solid considering this could be considered his first NHL season and the quality of this linemates.
He could be a 15g 30a guy moving forward while being a nuisance to other teams on the PK and forecheck. Looking forward to what he can do with more ice time and better linemates.
Really like the player, just wish there was a more natural fit on our roster for him.

Byron is the ideal utility forward for this team. He's not a top 6 forward but he's also not purely an energy guy either. He does what Galiardi was supposed to do last season, but better.
I'm really happy he was re-signed. He's worked hard and deserves every chance to make an impact in the NHL. 21 points and a +6 is pretty impressive.

Don't mind this at all. In this market it's a good depth signing. Was surprised he wasn't qualified. This makes sense now.

One thing I miss from the Feaster days was that the press releases for signings always included the term, money, and cap hit of all contracts. I know it doesn't matter, but I still want to know what he signed for.
