I was sad that he hadn't signed yet but I'm happy now! I hope he returns and is even stronger. He is fun to watch and quick sneaky! He has some wheels too.

#Flames Paul Byron's contract is a one-way deal. I don't know the financial terms, but had US$643,500 NHL salary last season when in NHL
Can't understate how valuable his speed can be if the he and the coaching staff make use of it. Watching him live at full speed is something else. Very happy he was signed.
Well I had assumed when they didn't give him a qualifying offer that they were looking to part ways. Turns out it was just to avoid arbitration. Size is still an issue throughout the lineup but good to see Byron's hard work get rewarded. He certainly plays like he's a big man.

Gotta give the wiserhood clap to managment here too, avoided arbitration with a player that had a strong case. This is a show-me deal if I ever saw one, great to see what you did last year, lets see again, type deal. Good job Brad!

So why would they release him last week and now re sign? Can someone smarter than me explain the reasoning?
If they qualified him there was the possibility of him going through salary arbitration where the Flames would have no option to walk away from arbitrator's decision.
The Flames didn't want to go down that path, that's why they didn't qualify him.

Byron, if he went to arbitration, had a really good case for a sizeable raise. The Flames want to see him do what he did last year again before fully buying into this guy, I think Byron has what it takes to show the brass what's up. This a deal that potentially could work out for both sides, super stoked by this move.

They didn't release him, they simply didn't give him a qualifying offer
And the reason for that was that it would have meant arbitration and they wanted to avoid that (and they acknowledged that he would have had a very good case)
