Yeah, the often hold pressers like this for the parents to speak out to the child or to the 'takers' of the child. To humanize the kid and the situation. Supposedly that sometimes works in getting the kidnappers to realize what they've done.

It is a really strange situation though, I'm not sure this is a typical abduction. Seeing the blood on the concrete I wonder if this is a robbery gone wrong sorta thing?

Ahhh, it could be anything.

This case seems like something out of a Law & Order episode. Very creepy to think it happened here in Calgary.

yikes man, from the footage on the news tonight, those "drag trails" don't look good.

Hope everything turns out ok

Are they trails of blood? Why are they just saying "dark liquid" in the articles? I thought it was easy to test for blood (granted, this is based on watching crappy CSI episodes 10 years ago).

If it is blood, I'm guessing those were false leads about the 3 of them being spotted in Canmore, then.

It looked like dried blood, but I mean it was poorly visible on the TV, but it had that brownish red look and there were some drops too. It didn't look good, but I am by no means an expert.

Watched the presser on the Sun website this morning. Wow that was tough to watch. When I heard the address I remembered what happened to me Monday. I always park my car right off of 39th ave by the 7-11 instead of at the LRT lot and Monday I came to get my car and the entire street was blocked off. After speaking with one of the officers I was finally able to get my car from within the perimeter. I had no idea until this morning that this was the area this happened in until I looked it up on Google maps. Trying to rack my brain to see if I can remember anything suspicious, but nothing comes to mind.

Hopefully the family can be found soon and safe.

CPS said "Disappearance of Nathan O'Brien, grandparents has become 'less of a mystery to us', say Calgary police."

Does it mean CPS thinks the kidnapper is known to the family?

Likely, Kidnapping where the persons are unknwon to the family are incredebly rare.

It could also be that they have found some CCTV footage identifying plates

I'll be that guy... Hoax? Don't know what the end game would be but yeah...

That seems like a pretty relaxed comment by the CPS...

Sounds like the kidnapping was staged, not the Grandparents in on it but the drag marks and "dark red substance" They have always been confident they will find them alive. I'm guessing a family member mad about money, its also weird how there was talk of a reward and then it was pulled back.

Lets hope for a quick resolve and a favorable outcome.

Every time I see an update in this thread I have this internal debate of hoping they've found the kid and knowing that if they haven't, I'll immediately feel completely sick....

I know I'm new around here, but I just have to bring this up: I've watched the press conference from yesterday over and over. To me, it seems like the mother was a little too calm. I don't know. Just got a funny feeling. Maybe I watch too much TV. There were times when she broke down, for seconds, and then went back to staring off into nothing.

I don't know how you're supposed to act in a situation like that. Just a feeling I got.

I hope the kid and grand parents show up soon, and safe.

Yeah, recent remarks from the CPS seem very carefree. They've likely had this figured out.

She's probably emotionally exhausted. I can only speculate based on my experience with my own grief (nothing close to the uncertainty of where you child is, however), but I know I hit a point where I just feel like a numb robot.

Or, perhaps with the father displaying such clear emotional distress, she felt she needed to be strong in her appearance for her son.

Like you, I have no clue how I would or should react in a situation like that. I simply exercised whatever empathy I could and tried to compute it from her POV after days worrying about her son.

I don't think this is a fair comment. It comes up at everytime one of these Kidnapping cases or accidental death cases happen. What is the correct amount of emotion to show not to arrouse suspicion. If you let it all out are you playing it up to the cameras. If you are stoic, are you an emotionless robot. I think either way some observers will say it wasn't natural and therefore they are guilty.

The problem is that often the kidnappers are related to the family or a family member is guilty and it re-enforces these random judgements. I would be willing to bet that you can't blindly pick out guilty and not guilty kidnappers/murdrers from the press conferences asking for their kids back. As such it is just insulting to those who really did just suffer a tragic loss.

You're probably right. My comment wasn't meant to insinuate anything or draw a conclusion.

I gotta stop watching so many crime shows.

After hearing various details over the last couple days I've been under the suspicion that this disappearance might be about money in some way. Maybe not from a family member but potentially over some sort of bad debt or some other financial involvement that the grandparents had.

It sounds like the pieces might be falling into place and some sort of resolution might be coming soon.

Yeah grief (or whatever you would call it in this situation) is a weird thing, and it's different for different people. Completely different situation from this obviously, but when my dad died, things were really weird. Between the moments of grief I would still play video games and enjoy myself, or watch sitcoms on TV and laugh. And it felt weird, because I didn't know if it was right for me to do this.

There's no way to know what's going on internally in these situations. Probably best not to make assumptions on guilt based on their expressions. They're likely just dying inside.
