BC increases speed limits
Alberta should do the same.

Speed limits are going up to 120 km/h on some B.C. highways, the province announced Wednesday.

So now I'll be able to do 120 on a single lane highway in BC, but to get there I still have to go through the ridiculous 90 km/h zone in the park which is a divided highway with millions spent in wildlife protection to keep animals off the road. God I hate that stretch

i am under the impression that BC has zero tolerance towards speeding. So 120kph in BC would equal the posted speed plus the 10 kph of typical wiggle room....

Huh. I drove home from Summerland today over the connector and thought I was mistaken about the sign. Did a double take. Nice

That part should be slower because of all the idiots on the road and all of the trailhead access but 90 is ridiculous. I would have it at 100 so you ticket at 120.

Spent today driving in Montana and I was wondering when Alberta was going to adopt increased speed limits. Daytime limit of 75mph, night time of 70mph on the four lane. And daytime of 70mph on the single lane highways. 65mph at night. Nobody is driving 110km/hr on the four lane hi ways in Alberta anyway. Time to increase it

Agreed. Too many morons stopped in the middle of the highway taking pictures of goats. I'd like to see that stretch seasonal at the very least. 100 in summer, 90 in winter maybe. Or just 100 the whole way I guess.
Either way good on BC (odd it was there of all places). Roads like the #1 and 2 here should follow suit.

You might be thinking of any vehicle going 30 km/h plus over the limit getting their vehicle impounded...

Maybe we could have a seasonal limit.

Back in the day almost every highway in BC had a 70MPH (112.6KPH) speed limit. A lot of the highways and cars weren't really built for this but it was fun. Speeds were reduced during the energy crunch to 55 or 90KPH almost everywhere except Alberta. Glad to see the BC govt. is showing some sense with this increase.

Whatever the signs say, you can already do 120 without issue on nearly any divided highway in Alberta. You just have to be wary of photo radar on a road like Deerfoot, Stoney, Anthony Henday. Hell, the average speed of Highway 2 is probably closer to 125.
Raising the official speed limit will likely only push the unofficial speed limit up to 130-135. Doubt the province wants to go for that, so the only real way there can be an official speed limit increase is if it includes a long and concerted crackdown on speeding. The end result will be no change to highway speeds from today, but a lot of pissed off people with big fines.

could also be that i listened to someone that did not know wha they were talkin' bout........as mentioned above, the issue with a posted limit of 120 is it pushes up the unposted limit.
i wonder if the other issue is commercial vehicles with a 100 kph governor.
how would people feel about a strictly enforced 120?

should be slower through all National Parks. There's more wildlife there, slow down and enjoy it.
The speed limit on regular highways is too low, cars handle better, stop faster, etc. There's no reason to keep it at 100.

I have gotten used to the 90 limit in the parks, just set the cruise at 95-97 and enjoy the ride.

Man, and Ontario still has a 100 speed limit on all the 400-series highways. The unofficial speed limit here is usually 120 on the 401, but if theres ever any open road, you can usually expect cars doing closer to 150 than 100.

I think the problem in Alberta is that people always go way over on the speed limit. If you post 110, people will general go 140, and if you change it to 140, then people will probably go 170...

As a guy who grew up by the BC border on the Alberta side, BC certainly used to have zero tolerence for speeding if you had Alberta plates, the standard was different for sure. Even my mother who drives painfully slow got her one and only speeding ticket there going a whole 8 km/hr over the limit.

I think if they were ever to increase the speed limit, they'd need to have severe penalties for exceeding the speed limit. Not something of inconvenience, but something that hits the pocketbook hard.

A lot of companies are moving towards vehicle tracking systems that alert the driver and employer if they exceed the speed limit. This means that the drivers have to stick to the official posted speed limit. I am all for raising the speed limit to 120 and making it clear that they will ticket for 130 and up.
The key part of the article is that they had the engineers look at each road and evaluate its design speed. They left it out of the hands of politicians and allowed the engineers to report on the safe speed of travel. (In typical engineering fashion, I am sure they base their math on a car with crappy brakes and bald tires.)
