Teams that don't sign their first round draft pick are compensated with a second round pick. Schultz and Knight were not first rounders so the team doesn't get compensated. in this scenario it is in Chicago's best interest to not trade him as the 2nd round compensation is better than anything being offered.

Ok, that's right... how come Anaheim didn't get compensated for Shultz then ? is there a 4 year rule or something ? Isn't Hayes on his 4th year ? Damn this is confusing.

In this case, the Hawks would get a 2nd rounder in 2015 if they are unable to sign him, so they won't take less in a trade. As a Flames fan, I wouldn't want to give up our 2nd in 2015 to acquire his rights, so it may be best for both parties just to wait until August 15th.
They get a 2nd and we get a free prospect.
|
right, I forgot that they were getting a second no matter what.

No. You only get compensation if you do not sign a first round pick. You get a second round pick in the same position he was drafted in the first round in the year following the year you lost his rights.
Hayes was chosen with pick #24 in 2010, so they would get pick #24 in the second round of 2015 (or pick #54 overall).

Yes, probably. The Flames second rounder next year will almost certainly be sooner than 54. They might also want a player of similar age to Hayes in return, so a guy like Agostino might be preferred for them.
Because that compensation is available to the Hawks at no cost to anyone, it might be everyone's preference to just wait until August.

No, plenty of draft picks get traded. Agostino and Hanowski are two recent examples with the Flames.

I do like the idea of getting Leddy as CHI needs to dump salary and they can't take back salary, so they would require a prospect or a prospect on a ELC. What if we trade Wotherspoon, our 2nd for Leddy and Hayes ?

I hope Treliving and co are all over this is if it's true that Hayes would be considering CGY. Take advantage and grab a young d-man like Leddy in the process.

Kevin Hayes with the Flames....
He'd be pretty high up the depth chart with his size and his 4 year NCAA development under his belt. In fact, pretty close to the top. Would be a smart move to kickstart his career; his mates Gaudreau and Arnold in the same system would just be an added bonus.
The Flames getting a free almost fully developed first rounder? There is nothing that makes this sound terrible.

I'd honestly just wait until August 15th. I'd be pretty disappointed if the Flames unnecessarily gave up their 2015 2nd rounder when they didn't have to. That's just poor asset management IMO. I don't see why Chicago would be pissed at the Flames. They should be pissed off at Hayes, not the Flames. Same thing with Erixon. I'm not mad at the Rags. I was pissed off at Tom.

I'm mad at the Rags. But that's just because, you know, Glen Sather.

Just wait and grab him off waivers this fall. That, or offer a mid to late round draft pick. He's not a top end talent and does not deserve anything remotely close to Hudler in return.

They can if it means upgrading from Wotherspoon to Leddy. To your point, I'd prefer to use our LW depth to grab another dman but Leddy is only two years older than Wotherspoon and has a higher ceiling. That said, I'd wait until August 15th for Hayes and grab him for free. Plus, I doubt Chicago is looking to get rid of Leddy to alleviate cap space.

Guys, if they want to move leddy or Oduya, it won't be for free. Both players are quality dmen, on good terms, and salary. They appeal to any team in need of dmen. Supply and demand. They will get picks and prospects for whichever they decide to trade since its not a pure cap dump situation. You guys are dreaming on this one.

Morin or Gostisbehere please, let them dump whoever they want on our books.

It is absolutely a cap dump situation. What do you expect them to get back in trade? both players make right around the amount of cap they are over. Of course it's going to be picks and prospects.
And in Leddy's case, he is young enough to warrant a package of a pick and prospect with Hayes attached (assuming they know full well he is not going to sign with them). So I disagree with you statement that folks are in fact dreaming.
This is the reality of CHI's situation.
