Why give up assets for Hayes if it's unofficially official that he's going to sign with Calgary anyway?

To not piss teams off. We did the same with Corban Knight.

Not too long ago people were questioning whether JG would put pen to paper with Calgary to now where the possibility of one not signing with his draft team to come here. My how times have changed (for the better).

Luring a former 1st round pick here (especially a 6'3" 205lb RW) would be great!

Soooooo, how do we get Hayes brother out of Florida without giving up futures or core pieces? Hudler?

Knight was a bit different because FLA wasn't going to get a compensatory pick for not being able to sign him.
In this case, the Hawks would get a 2nd rounder in 2015 if they are unable to sign him, so they won't take less in a trade. As a Flames fan, I wouldn't want to give up our 2nd in 2015 to acquire his rights, so it may be best for both parties just to wait until August 15th.
They get a 2nd and we get a free prospect.

Problem is, CHI would get a 54th pick as compensation (2nd rounder) . So my question is- why would they want anything less AND would our organization want to pay that high of a price as we would have to beat a 54th pick naturally. It's not like they are going to trade his rights for a 5th rounder if they are getting a 2nd round pick anyways.

I posted the ESPN article because it was from a Chicago area reporter. This story sure seems to have some legs now doesn't it?

Acquiring him now would allow you to account for his spot on the roster in Adirondack (yay, the first time I typed that without getting the red squiggle underneath).
If you wait until the middle of August and hold a spot for him, and then he signs with the Panthers instead, you have to find a replacement from a depleted talent pool. On the other hand, even if you wait, you'd just have to find a winger for the AHL, it's not like you'd holding a spot open on your NHL first line or anything.
Also, as mentioned, making an honest effort to compensate the Hawks could possibly help out relations down the road.

Also, I'm confused as why CHI would get a 54th pick as compensation. Did Shultz's and Knight's drafting teams get compensation ?

The goal isn't for just his rights. They're 2.3m over the cap and NEED to move a guy like Leddy or Oduya (said to be on the block from a few people). If you can snag his rights and another serviceable young player like Leddy for a second round pick would you do it then?
A bit of good manners goes a long way. Teams like dealing with other teams who play nice.

Agreed, but if they are getting a 2nd round, 54th pick anyways, wouldn't they want better as compensation ?

I just have a bad feeling he is going to sign with the Panthers. They're a young team as well, with a lot of talent, and blood runs thicker than water. Hoping he chooses his fellow BC alumni as he would give us a shot in the arm on the right side of our prospect pool.

Oh I agree. But that's assuming that a 2 player trade is in the works or possible- what if Leddy or Oduya get traded elsewhere ? then what ?

Plus, doesn't a player actually have to be signed before his "rights" can be traded ?

OK
Oduya, Leddy plus the 54OA for our 2nd (say 34OA) still would not be as attractive to the Hawks as Oduya and Leddy for our 2nd.
From the Hawks POV it remains best to let him walk regardless Aug 15. We would not be doing them any favors.
The only benefit I can see is easing our guilt at taking him for free.
