I think MDZ would be nice at a 2 year deal. Play him as a 7th defenceman. Wideman has made players better like Russell and Brodei. Plus Under Giordano, Brodie and Wideman and Russell he can learn some tricks. I'd still prefer Cody Franson and trade Wideman. Younger, more physical, very good puck mover. His problem is in his own end but pair him with Smid and he'd be fine.
Also I don't want Mueller. We'd play him 4th line and physically he might be healthy but mentally. Head injuries change how you think and make you less aggressive.
No more forwards. They'd just steal a spot from Reinhart or Gaudreau or Baertschi
If the rumours about Michael Del Zotto being a party problem are true, that would be an issue (don't want to mess with the teams focus), but one would think that over time, that can be sorted out.
Yes, but I believe Wideman and Glencross will both be asked to waive before the end of the season. With Wideman being sooner rather than later. All speculation on my part.
Ya, put m. Down for Del Zotto and Setoguchi. Not like if they don't perform at max potential we may not win the cup. A 24 year old Dman may still mature, and Hartley seems to be a guy who can jelk the last drops of talent out of guys.
It's got to be all off-ice stuff/attitude with MDZ. He's too talented to have been bounced around and go unsigned.
A lot of it has to do with his qualifying offer which I think is 3m minimum which is fairly high for how he played. Also there was no room in Nashville for him with webber jones josi and Ellis. He was a stud in new York until he became torts whipping boy, and new York moved him to lower the cap hit.
3 years ago he was better then Brodie has ever been, is 24 has top pairing upside, and was top 4 on an eastern conference final team. Not to mention he was half a point a game d man in the shortened season.
I do think there are some issues ( just a guess I have no inside info) but I would assume they relate to work ethic, and partying.
Having said that if the leadership in your room is strong (gio, glencross, big ern) the flames may be able to give this kid a career revival. I would give him a 3 year 7.5-9m deal, unless there are some red flags that I do not know about.

It baffles me why almost every trade proposal includes Wideman. He is literally the only right handed defenseman we have, he can QB a PP and has a booming shot. Yes, he could be better on the defensive end but he's not a complete liability out there. I'm curious as to whom you think could replace what he brings, so easily. If anything we should be looking to offload a LW. Hudler, Glencross, Gaudreau, Raymond, Baertschi, with Klimchuk and Poirier waiting in the wings. That is a lot of top 9 forwards with only 3 spots available.

I myself am an avid Wideman supporter. That being said:
It's pretty consistently thrown out there on the Fan960 and rumblings elsewhere that Treliving and company are highly motivated to get Widemans contract off of the books. I've heard myself on FA frenzy day. I wouldn't much believe it either if I didn't.
So the truth is, they want to move Wideman before training camp. The radio guys said they'd be shocked if he was still here by then.

Setoguchi is a player I really noticed in his first season with San Jose, and then he regressed. You might be able to count him for 20 goals in a season, but I really doubt Hartley would like him much. He just doesn't seem to be one of those lunch-pail types, and he isn't talented enough not to be (though there is something there obviously with 20 goals).
He just seems slow and disinterested. Seems like a guy who just doesn't work hard. SJ fans lost their appreciation for him, as did Wild fans and Jets fans now. As long as the contract didn't carry term, I wouldn't hate it, but he might stick out like a sore thumb with his lack of footspeed now and the seemingly lack of urgency he plays with now.

Setoguchi has an attitude problem and is a lazy player... I wouldn't want him anywhere near our young guys... Del Zotto is a risk, I'd rather just fill the 3-4 D with a stay-at-home Dman...

Ott was on the sabres last year, surprised he kept it only at -38. I think he provides leadership and grit. I still wouldn't mind giving Heatley a Havlat kind if contract. Del Zotto might just need a change too, the way Hartley had this team playing, I think it's worth a shot. He's young and was pretty highly touted, if h regains form it's like Russell bt possibl better, he'd probably make Russell redundant and a trade option too.

He isn't an exciting guy but I think Ryan White would be a good signing and fit for our 4th line.
He is a good FO guy (which we could really use), tough, gives it his all and has a history with Calgary from his junior days.
He would likely come very cheap and a 4th line of Bollig-White-Bouma would be able to bring toughnes needed and actually play a legit 10 minutes a night if needed.
