I look at it this way. People here were willing to overpay for Cammy for a few short years for the sake of mentoring the young guys. If what at we are told is true, then we signed Engelland for the same thing at a cheaper price. The money is irrelevant as long as the term is good.

One can argue that merits of having a veteran mentoring the young dman on their roster, however, I am not sure why anyone thing Engelland is that guy?
I mean we're not signing some former elite dman that is entering his twilight years here...maybe I am being overly harsh here, but I am not sure what a journeyman NHL brings to the table in terms of mentoring?
I think you want heart and soul guys who give it their all and are good in the dressing room. Whether they are elite players or journeymen isn't as important. From the stories, it seems like Engelland is really popular in the dressing room. You need guys like that to keep the group focused when they are losing. Last thing you want is a bunch of entitled guys like the kids up north.
On the January 14th, 2011 episode of TSN's Off The Record former NHL enforcer Jim Thomson selected Engelland as the best fighter in the NHL, noting how smart of a fighter he is, and calling him 'the hardest puncher by far.'

Great team mate.
Good in the room.
Serviceable on bottom pairing.
Stands up for team mates.
Drops the gloves and wins more than he loses.
Salary really not a concern for the duration.
It all lends to bringing along the young guys, rebuilding.

Guys like Baertschi/Bennett/Granlund/Gaudreau they can skate with confidence knowing that they are protected by the likes of Bollig/McGrattan/Engelland/
I like how the tough guys we brought in can play their positions that they will fill, even Big Ern was giving us solid minutes down the stretch after that Nucks game in January. With the effort this team puts out I don't think we are as bad as some are making us out to be. If we have this goalie combo to start the year last year I think we win at least 5 more games if not 10.

According to Treliving, Engelland will be helpful for the Flames on and off the ice. I have no idea what kind of person Engelland is but I will trust Treliving and the management group on this decision. They obviously think he will be helpful in mentoring the younger players. If he can make Monahan, Gaudreau, etc. better players than he will be well worth his contract.

These are the kinds of moves the Oilers were making 3-4 years ago.
Hire a whole bunch of face punchers to "Shelter" the kids.
In reality it forced the kids into bigger roles as the face punchers can't play more 10 minutes a night without getting lit up.
Yea Bolig (who played 10 mins a night for Chicago) and Engelland on our 4th line and 3rd d-pairing are real similar to Stortini and McIntyre. That's an astute observation on your part.
Good luck throwing German kid on the 2nd line as Plan A to start the season.
The Flames and Oilers are so much alike with their developmental plans and thinking.

This shows a considerable, I mean considerable, lack of understanding of the Calgary Flames. Not really that surprising either. Just out of curiosity; Why do you always try to disparage the Flames with posts that shows you don't actually know much about our team? Is it just to get back at CP for the Oilers stuff or what?
So we add a 5/6th defensemen who can play a regular shift, is a great locker room guy, but because he can fight, leads you to the conclusion of; You guys are doing what failed the Oilers 4 years ago in trying to bring in face-punchers to shelter the kids".
You know what failed the Oilers four years ago? The same thing that has failed the Oilers from 2007 to 2014; A complete lack of competency from the stick boy up to the GM.

We still have Hudler, Glencross, Stajan, Raymond, Jones, Backlund, Giordano, Wideman, Russell, and Smid besides the face punchers as you put it. 10 veterans + 4 fighters helps to allow the remaining 4-5 spots to be filled by younger players (that includes all of Colborne, Monahan and Brodie plus two kids)
We also are not putting fresh rookies on the first line playing 20 minutes a night, even Monahan played 2nd line minutes and he was more of an exception.
Additionally, we have more depth than Edmonton did in all areas, so there isn't a need to rush guys that aren't ready. It's more to protect Gaudreau and to build a work ethic amongst the group.
