Of course, this is also a league where GMs think they should sign players for 13 years, so there you go.
Agree. I felt one of the most important things for the Flames to accomplish today was to fill the holes we did without giving out long-term contracts. Nice to see that management has a good perspective on that aspect of player contracts. Only long-term if you're a core piece.

Call me an extremely optimistic person but th media saying we are going to tank and the sheeple are buying in to this makes me nucking futz.

Competition has been created.

Our young draft picks and up and comers will make some very tough decisions.

Hartleys philosophy that players earn their spot and Monahan doing that last year only proves it.

Ramo showed brilliance, Ortio showed it, Hiller is a good goalie .....none are Kipper nor will ever be.

Lets wait and see what Hartley can do.

Hes a damn Good coach like Sutter was ....grinding good.hockey outa mediocrity.

Go My Flames go.........go awayy media...let me cheer for my team.

I think the key to what he said was

"Want to create environment where young guys can be confident out on the ice."

I hear that as saying that the Flames think Gaudreau will make the team sooner rather than later.

Granlund? Sven? Monahan? Max? Lotsa other young guys as well.

Gaudreau should spend a full year in the A.

No, I specifically mentioned Gaudreau because of his size. When Burke addressed questions about Gaudreau's size, he specifically said he was not akin to having smaller skilled players on the team provided there was enough size and toughness around smaller players to give them skating and breathing room.

"Paul Byron: Still interested in him. In his case he would have had a tremendous arbitration case if qualified. Still talking to him and his agent including today."

Great for me to hear. I lost a little faith in our brain trust when it looked like they didn't care about him and were just letting him go. Now this proves it is not the case, hope they get him signed.

Great point, while I don't like the signing, I would be pleased if this is how things played out.

That roster is in McDavid territory. I suspect the flames make a couple deals before oct 1 or that is an ugly roster
Yeah we might not score any goals this year. But that's okay, I am not expecting much from this year and getting another top prospect next draft is fine by me.

I listened to the interview just now when I had time. I am very comfortable about everything that Treliving said. Probably the most important that struck to me was that he said he didn't want to sign players over 3 years term (at least when UFA hunting). He pretty much said he doesn't want to sign a player on a long term and have the possbility of buying him out later. He's being pretty smart when it comes to thinking about the future of the Flames.

the roster changes are as follows by my calculation, in order of significance:
Cammalleri replaced by Raymond -> big drop off
macdonald replaced by Hiller -> decent improvement
Butler replaced by Engellend -> equal
westgarth replaced by Bollig -> equal, maybe slight improvement

i realize we have some kids that could hopefully push the envelope at camp or throughout the year and earn some spots with the big club, however, safe to assume the team is worse this year. I think we could be in for another fun year without much as far as results in the standings, and another amazing pick.

Exciting times!

Gaudreau would be wasted in the AHL. Not sure if the risk of injury would be much less either. He's probably the most talented player the Flames have right now.

I suspect we'll be looking to make a trade for a young top 4 defenceman who will be part of the core moving forward. This might not happen until the start of the season or it might happen tomorrow. A lot of teams will be evaluating their lineups after the dust of the draft and free agency frenzy dies down.

I suspect he will get a 1/2 season in the American league. I would guess that one of Glencross or Hudler will be moved before the deadline opening a top six LW spot for Johnny by Christmas.

Give the Flames an "A" on these moves? Why?

They filled some holes (though expensive - it is the FA market after all), but NO LONG-TERM ANCHORS!

None of these contracts are anything to worry about. Whenever a team can fill holes in the UFA class without possible bloated long-term contracts that can adversely affect them down the road, it is a win.

I would rank the raymond replacement as a drop but not that big of one. Him going on the hot streak after the deadline really seem to erase the half season prior where he was pretty invisible and disinterested. I know Raymond has the same tendencies to go on streaks and disappear but to me its not a huge as it may seem.

Hiller over Macdonald is a HUGE upgrade. One is a career ahler that can do spot duty as a backup in the NHL the other is coming off a inconsistent year where he had 29 wins and .911 save percentage. I think Ramo and Hiller can make for a really good tandem and at worst with give us a commodity at the deadline.

Butler IMO is a better skater and probably a better overall player but his inability to pass out of our zone and the fact he never used his size frustrated me to no end. I like the fact Derek E. brings that enforcer touch to our D corps and by all accounts is a great character player. Im not sure what his shot is like but as long as its not the muffin Butler had ill call this a wash.

Bollig imo is a pretty big improvement on westgarth, i like the fact he had more that just an enforcer role with the hawks. He was trusted enough to play decent enough minutes on there team and i really think he with be a great addition.

I guess we lost a couple of depth players in the AHL. Street signed with Colorado I think and Blair Jones to Philadelphia.

Both were very important to the Heat (as was Breen). However, there is also an influx of talent coming in as well this upcoming season and for the foreseeable future. I especially wish Street and Breen lots of luck.

Yeah, and we still need a goalie for Adirondack and maybe another for depth.
