It's a bad contract for a fairly immobile player.

Chances are that person making $6M per year can help our team win! Why on earth would it makes sense to overpay by ridiculous amounts just so we can check off "hit the cap floor" on our list?!

Because there's no $6 million players available that are useful, and want to play here for the coming season.
And we still have $6 million (several times over) to pay for someone else, even if that player was available.

Gio - Doesn't take any crap, can hold his own
Engelland - A true middleweight who has taken on heavyweights like McGrattan and Orr
McGrattan - Yea
Bollig - Another solid middleweight
Bouma - Doesn't take crap, can hold his own
Smid - Doesn't take crap, can hold his own
We are going to be a mean team to play against next year wow.

I remember those reports started only after the season ended, and the Flames knew they wouldn't be able to move SOB. During the season I actually remember SOB getting praise from Ward...

"He's been great all week," Heat head coach Troy Ward said of O'Brien following Thursday's practice. "He's really a breath of fresh air. He just wants to have fun, he wants to play minutes, he doesn't want to hear he's not good enough.
"He's a veteran with a young man's heart, a young man's attitude. He's able to fit into the group really well . . . he's got a lot of pizzazz to him, a lot of life to him."

O'Brien keeping upbeat attitude
So judging from those comments he really doesn't sound like a guy with a problem. It is just another convenient reason to justify the management's actions. Honestly, I don't know what kind of a guy he is in the dressing room, but neither do I know enough about Engelland to claim everything will be rosy.

The one thing I'll say is this management isn't afraid of going after the players they want. Macdonald/Smith at the draft and now overspending for Engelland. Treliving must feel pretty powerful, could have never made this deal in phoenix.

Shane O'Brien was a player who was demoted and bought out because he failed to buy into the system and the Flames' culture of hard work. I haven't heard anything about that from Engelland - I don't think it is fair to say Engelland is another O'Brien. If he is, he certainly is a more coachable one.
I think the deal is an overpayment but not certainly not a disaster.

Either way, I'm going to need some more popcorn.
But in all honesty, welcome to the team Engelland, and it's great to have such diversities of opinion among CPers.

There were comments made when he was sent down. I will try to look for them as they were brought up in another thread when it was pointed out same thing you are now.
By all accounts he said right things in AHL but prior to being sent down Burke and/or Hartley said there were issues with him and his work habits while with the Flames.

Buffalo, Edm, Ott, NJ, Isles, Canes and a few others could all be worse. There are a lot of teams that are very close to each other. Did you predict the order of finish of the ten worst teams last year? Doubt it.
BTW You made this same post in another thread before you edited it slightly. Any reason why you feel the need to cut and paste your posts?

Yes, I changed the Engelland for Butler from a (win) to a (tie). I'm just really hoping we don't get better for one year, and the Hiller for MacDonald/Berra (win) could keep us from getting one of the top 2 picks. We've haven't gotten a top pick nor made the playoffs for 12 of the past 17 seasons. It seems like many are hoping for that again next year. I don't want to cheer for that anymore. Even if everything went the Flames way, do people really believe they have a shot at the playoffs next year?

Always cheer for improvements and hope your team has a shot.
Finishing 18th would be great as long as it is organic improvement.

Awful money but then again that is about the last thing the Flames are concerned about at this point. Contract will be up before it would actually start to hurt the team.
I don't hate this /insert neutralface img

The Flames need a player who makes others pay for running our goalies or taking libertines with them. If he can do that on a nightly basis, it is money well spent.

Trade? Flames made a trade?
After seeing what all the D signed for today, it's a tiny bit better. Thank goodness it's not longer than 3 years.

Even at 2.9 million total over 3 years, it is only an average contract at best. I'd rather the club not spend 9 million on a ridiculous contract and cut ticket prices.

Not a fan of the price also. Having cap flexability is a reason I suspect that Treliving was willing to over pay.
