You can see the exact moment when Burke told Treliving to step aside as he took over the phones.
Brutal, unnecessary contract.
LOL
Didn't realize it was possible that Treliving couldn't like big guys as well. I mean he has talked about it and said he does but that must have been all lies.
The stuff people try to convince themselves of is hilarious.

I really don't understand how people think rebuilds work. We need hard working, gritty, smash mouth hockey players in order to establish our identity as one of the meanest teams in the league. To do that, we can't ice a team of Byron and Butlers. Who cares if its an overpayment - its what the market dictated.
We have to build an environment on the ice where Johnny can go out there and rip it up - Engelland, Bollig, McGrattan all help do that. Fact is, we're going to get destroyed on the scoreboard by the insanely deep western conference this season. We have to find a way to make them pay for that.

He's not necessarily a 6/7 guy. With all of the Penguins injuries next season he spent much of the year as a 4/5 playing 15+ a night. I think it's a decent enough signing, not great or anything, but you gotta pay to play on July 1st.

Treliving also made it very clear that he understands that more mistakes are made on July 1 than good moves.
Either he just fooled himself or this was Burke's move. Take your pick.
What else can Engelland do? 32 year old fighter is more or less what he is. He is a modern day Wade Belak with a ceiling of being a Todd Simpson. These are the type of signings you need though to be in the hunt for McDavid and Day.
Play defense.
If all he was was a fighter teams wouldn't have him playing defense for them.
He isn't expected to play 25 mins a night against Crosby while QBing the PP.

I really hope our management doesn't believe you can build a team with Engelland making almost $3M AAV.
This is the most concerning part.
We're not 'building' a team by signing guys like Engelland - I'd hardly consider him a key building block and will likely be gone by the time we are contending. All our prospects on defense could use at least another year in the AHL.
We're building a team with our drafting and allowing our current prospects to develop patiently. Signing a stop gap like Engelland will help in that area.
Is what it is. Can't get too up in arms about this. The Flames are still closer to the bottom of the league in cap usage and still need maybe one more small signing.
RH D is what we were all screaming for, they gave it to us. Flames needed to keep getting tougher to play against, they addressed that.
IMO my view on addressing RH D was for PP purposes but this'll do as well.
