Is Pittsburgh not expected to be a player in any of this? Haven't heard much if anything about interest in any of the UFA's.

Heard they want Kulimen to play with Malkin.

Him liking the team, city and organization really has nothing to do with making the best financial choice + shot at a cup on the last contract of his career. Really odd conclusion to come to. He can like it here and at the same time realize his biggest payday and opportunity to win is elsewhere. The two have nothing to do with one another.

Apparently their main targets are Pouliot and Kulemin:

I think Callemmari would really fit nice there. Sounds like they are looking for a "different kind of player" this year though.

Being that were one of probably less than 10 teams that could afford Niskanen at 6+ million, we should 110% be in there making bids.

For 6+ years? Since when is Niskanen an elite defenseman?

Would honestly be happier with Stralman at 4.5x5. Signing Niskanen to that contract is just going to be a mistake in 3 years. Even now he's not worth that (even if he is going to get that dollar easily).

I can't claim 100% that it'll be great in 3 years time. I do, however, really believe Niskanen would be a huge step in the right direction. Stralman hates what happened to him last time here. He will not return.

That's the definition of insanity. Some sucker/team is going to offer him something like that and regret it a year or two down the road. Teams get really stupid on July 1st.

Aye, we've all seen those mistakes. Every year. I've got confidence in Niskanen, but I'm no hockey mind or scout.. so yeah, it's all hopeful wishing on my part.

I guess we will see where he lands and what he contributes.

I think Niskanen is a legit top 4 who's young enough that he could continue to grow a little more even. Can definitely be part of a contending Flames team in 3+ years as our #3 guy. If there's any FA d-man that I would offer a 5-6 year contract to, it would be him.

Matt Niskanen has played 8 years in the league and averaged about 20pts per year until last year.

You would wager 6 years on that????

And you'd pay our 3rd best defenseman $6M per year?????

The world's gone mad! He's the new Bobby Holik, David Clarkson, etc. The "best" UFA available. Guaranteed buy out or trade within 2-3 years

If someone wants to pay that for Niskanen, have at it. I hope it's not the Flames and suddenly Widemans contract is looking a lot better.
