Why would Statsny want to go to Edmonton?
That team always sets itself up for disappointment.

Thought I'd post the source:
@SportsnetSpec: EDM is in hot pursuit of Stastny. As the top centre on the UFA market, you can assume EDM is part of a large group. @Archaeologuy

if it cost 4.5 million per year to convince nikitin to join the oilers, i wonder if the oilers are putting up 8+ million per year for stasnty? i am unclear on whether i'm sorta hoping they sign him for something like 8.5 for 6 years.

Hard to believe since it's coming from Eklund, but I wonder what the contract would look like if Cammi does re-sign?
Rumours were he wanted 5 years. I would hope the term is no longer than 3 years.

Stastny is going to get paid huge. Toronto and Edmonton will bid each other into oblivion.
Even if it's 4 years, I'll still be happy with retaining Cammalleri. I still really think that if Cammy is retained, Jiri is out the door once the other scoring wingers on the market sign. Retaining 50% of Hudler's contract would make him a hell of an asset.

what is overpaying for Statsny though?
I think as long as someone gets him at 7m or under (with the way the cap is going to go up with the new tv deal) I think it's a fair offer, maybe even 7.5m if the term isn't too bad or there's no NTC

You don't need to retain Hudlers Salary, He's a great value at 4m IMO. I don't see how if they move him it would be for only picks/prospct. Money via a roster player would be involved as well. Just my thoughts though.

only 2 years left on his deal though - would have to think that retaining that salary would be a great way to maximize value.

I could see that. If Cammy re-signs, doubt there is room for him and Hudler on the Flames, especially with Baertschi and Gaudreau waiting in the wings. Only retain salary if it maximizes return though. Otherwise that's a decent contract for Hudler.

I still see teams like Boston and Pittsburgh, both in relative cap-hell, wanting to get top 6 forwards but lacking the space to do it as great destinations.

Cammy clearly had a change of heart after seeing Bennett get picked #4!

It might be the only way the flames could trade for a legit 2nd pairing d man. Hudler at $2 million is the deal of the century.
Personally I rather have Hudler over Cammi , but if it means getting a dman and keeping Cammi I would take the latter.

If Stastny goes to Edmonton, they WILL overpay.
It would still be a good move for them though
(the one caveat being that the 'stars' all signed 6x6 deals and now someone else would be getting more - could be room issues)

It'll be interesting how the Flames view Byron and his future on the team.

Maybe they can try him on RW? Otherwise I don't see a spot for him.
If you could get him on another 2way deal great, otherwise he's probably gone.

Is the plan next season to go with:
NHL:
Ramo
UFA Back-up
AHL:
Ortio
UFA Back-up
ECHL:
Roy
Then in 2015/2016
NHL:
Ramo (50 Games)
Ortio (32 Games)
AHL:
Gillies
UFA Back-up
I think that's how they should approach the goaltending situation with Mason Mcdonald coming into the AHL the following year.
