But Purcell is "The Answer" tm

It's hilarious to see the oilers making the same mistakes as they do year after year... They're likely going to gift-wrap a top six spot to draisaitl and ruin him like all their other kids. Their depth at the NHL level and at the prospect level is pathetic. Meanwhile, in Calgary... Monahan, backlund, stajan, granlund, knight, Reinhart, Byron, colborne, and Bennett will all be battling for a centre ice position this fall. Sure some guys have the inside track but every one of them knows they have to earn a spot and keep it cause there are plenty of guys knocking on the door.

I guess the Flames should trade off Stajan and Backlund because we just drafted a shiny new toy that we just can't wait to plug into our top 6? This is the way NHL teams work right?

Given the egos on that Oilers brain trust, the subsequent trade by Tampa and conversations around the league must really be pissing them off!

Wouldn't it come to half the cost of buying him out? I think players get 2/3 of their total when bought out

They have an extra close to $5M in cap space after getting rid of Purcell and Crombeen so I can see that rumour being true. I am sure Boston will shed some salaries too in order to go after Iginla. I really think Iggy and Boston are the right fit.

Only if they are over 26 I believe. Anything younger than that is only 1/3

So in reality, Tampa dumps a big salary on Edmonton, then does "buy out" Gagner, and then Phoenix gets him "signed" to a $3M contract without anyone having a chance to bid on him. Pretty slick move all around. Winners are Phoenix and Tampa. Biggest loser is of course Edmonton.

At the start of the day Yzerman was going to buyout Purcell and pay him 6M not to play for the Lightning.

Then MacTavish came along and offered Gagner, so Yzerman was down to paying 3.33M to remove Purcell from the team.

Then Arizona came along and now Yzerman got a 6th round pick in addition to only paying 3.33M to remove Purcell from the team.

Arizona gets Crombeen and a Gagner at 3.33M for the next 2 years at the cost of a 6th round pick.

And then there's Oiler fans who somehow think they came out ahead with a player who a couple hours ago was going to have his contract bought out.

Not all Oiler fans are drinking the koolaid...

The not getting better part is my opinion, so me. We shouldn't be looking to get younger or cheaper necessarily, but when you aren't getting better, then there should be some sort of justifiable reason for making the trade. It's hard to say, "we'll, we didn't improve, but on the bright side, at least we got older".

I forgot to mention we also didn't fill the 2C hole everyone had identified (which Gagner would have at least filled to some degree) or the multiple holes on D.

Maloney made yet another outstanding addition IMO buying extremely low on a player with plenty of upside.
Quote:
We should be using our cap space to add NHL players, not trading our NHL players for lesser NHL players who make the same money (more if you consider the fact that AZ is only paying Gagner $3.2M)

Can we please stop continuously linking back to HFboards? While some of them are funny, I don't need a play-by-play of what Oiler fans are thinking. If I wanted that I'd go sign up over there.

The Bruins don't have the cap space to resighn Iginla, especially when they have to pay his bonuses this year.

Well the Oilers had no other way in getting Purcell. It's not like he was going to choose to sign with the Oilers. So it's either make the trade and force him to play in Edmonton, or find someone that will sign there out of their own free will. Good luck doing that, unless they're going to pay them at least two times what other teams would offer (which is essentially what Purcell is signed to).

A)It's just sign, they've never signed Iginla before to resign him
B)We don't know Iginla's next contract. What bonuses if any have to count.
C)Don't know if you noticed but Tampa Bay just cleared out some cap space.
