Lateral trade IMO. Seems like a trade akin to shuffling the chairs on the deck of the Titanic. Oilers are still going to sink.
Good for Gagner though.

Purcell was credited with 13 hits last season.... Just 13 in 81 games.

As Teddy Purcell. He only had one good season as far as I know. Last season he's been terrible. The way Tampa fans talked about him, it looks like he will fit in with the Oilers perfectly. The team is full of individual who doesn't even know the meaning of the word "TEAM".
|
Not sure I agree. He's been a 40-50 point player since he came in the league. They definitely didn't teach him how to play a defensive game or round out his game other than offense, so yeah, that's on the Oilers for sure.
I think Gagner is the better player here at least in terms of potential. Tampa is doing a good job getting rid of their junk and at least they got a decent player in return.
Oilers management is just awful after seeing this trade go down for a player (soft, perimeter, no-defense winger) that doesn't help them at all and forcing Draisaitl into the lineup next year. It bottles the mind.

Less than that, if you take away the times he ran into his own player.

Best part....what they could have got for him via trade a few years vs this outcome.

I'd expect Gagner to never play centre again. Most small centres should be moved to the wing ala Hudler. Especially in the west! Oilers should've moved him to the wing already but didn't have the centre depth to do it.

So this make Hall and Eberle now the longest serving Oilers?

Yeah point-wise he was okay but he was inconsistent and a defensive liability. He would have been a better overall player if he was playing somewhere else.

Hall/Eberle/Petry are all Oilers since 2010/2011.
Ryan Jones is from 2009/2010 but I think he's being let go, so yeah you're right.
They've thrown out their entire team since 2009 and have so much to show for it!

Pretty 'blah' deal for both teams. Oilers needed some grit, not a guy who will shy away from physical play. Gagner was garbage for the most part, so I guess at least the Oilers are trying something new. Kinda.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
EDM's trade of Sam Gagner to TB for Ted Purcell doesn't necessarily mean Gagner will stay in TB. Buyout a possibility but so is a trade.
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Hearing PHX, which recently bought out centre Mike Ribeiro, is a possible landing spot for Gagner. Stay tuned.

Pretty much the same thing that happened with Cogliano. Now he's playing wing in a top 6ish capacity for one of the best teams in the league.
Not sure the game plan is with Gagner, but he's a product of poor development, lack of depth and high expectations. Put him in the top 6, give him a ton of ice-time and label him a future star and you're "forced" to give him a top 6 contract that they were going to regret when he loses his 20 minutes a night playtime to actual top 6 forwards. I don't mind Gagner, and now I can hope some team gives him the chance to develop properly to make the Oilers look stupid again.

It's funny that Tampa was willing to take anything to get rid of Purcell. They don't want Gagner at all, they just want Purcell even less
I hope they can flip Gagner to PHX for something of value so everyone around the NHL can continue to laugh at Edmonton

Coyotes have been rumored to be moving Yandle for a while now.
Could the Lightning package Gagner for Yandle?
Erik Erlendsson @erlendssonTBO
As the Bob Father points out, Phoenix in need of centers, and just so happens that Yandle could be moved #Hmmmm #Speculation

I had 12 hits WATCHING the flames play last year. "Sorry, just trying to get to the washroom." "Mmmmmm Malts." "Cold Beer here!" "Check it Flames girls" "Heading to the Whiskey" " my bad, bathroom again" "50/50 over here" " Hey look, more Flames girls" "Cold Beer here!" "Relax! Just heading to the bathroom." "Dam it, lost 50/50 by only 3672 numbers" "Get out of my way, PISSER"
