You are most certainly signing a contract.

Thread bump!

Be careful, these dicks are making the rounds again. My mom accidentally signed a contract after he told her he was contracted by government, and that she was obligated to sign a contract to keep her power running. I got home a bit later and immediately called them up and cancelled the contract. Can't believe the crap these guys try and pull on unknowing people.

Just glad I had read this thread earlier in the year, as otherwise I would have been none the wiser that it was a complete scam.

I never answer my door for people I don't know. Heck, I don't even answer it when my friends come over. I just yell from my living room for them to come in. When Purolator delivered a package one time I didn't answer. They leave a pickup slip, so I just went and picked my package up at Purolator. The only time I'll answer it, and I kinda have to, is when the pizza guy delivers pizza.

Conclusion....I'm just really lazy.

I signed up with them and I have actually noticed a huge difference in price this month gas and power for me was 250 as opposed to having direct energy for gas and epcor for power was 450 combined last year and in summer months gas and power is about 108 -130 $ combined

I just had a salesman at my door last night, he made it sound like he worked for Enmax. My boyfriend and I asked him 3 times why he was here and who he was with and he just kept saying "I'm with your service provider". I was confused about why I had to show him my Enmax bill and he started spitting out numbers and how much money I'm going to save. Not once did he say that I would have to sign a contract or that he was from Just Energy until the end when he started filling out the contract. I then realized that this guy had just wasted 20 minutes of my time because he couldn't be truthful, I grabbed the paperwork and kicked him out of my house. I'm not happy about the way these people are trying to do business and I could definitely see how someone could fall for this when they make it sound like they are with your energy provider. I would like to make a complaint about them but I'm not sure who to complain to, any suggestions?

Simplest thing to do is if someone shows up at your door that you don't know is to go to the door with a baseball bat and look around with an extreme amount of paranoia and ask him if Fernando sent him, then reach out, grab his shoulder and try to pull him in while muttering "Your not safe man"

I guarantee he'll probably never cold call that entire neighbourhood again and you'll be a hero.

This works a lot better if you have blood on your hands.

Or when he's talking at first stare at him intently and then say

"I have to interrupt you, but you have beautiful skin, do you use off the shelf moisturizer or" then its important to drool a little "Something more exotic"

I mean really if you put up a sign that says no soliciting and they still ring the doorbell, you might as well get some fun out of it.

My suggestion would be to not entertain door-to-door salespeople at all. I'm always shocked that people give these individuals any of their time. Usually I'll open the door, and determine how much time I intend to give them by which organization they are with.

Door-to-door salespeople? "Not interested. Have a nice day." Close the door. Yes, even if they are in mid-sentence.

Charitable organization? After they finish their introduction, "Thank you, not interested." We give to charities that we want to and don't need to be sold on anything.

Just a bump - they are making the rounds in Capitol Hill, so if you have any elderly relatives there, remind them of this scammy business (or anywhere in the city, probably a good reminder).

Also, thank you Cpuck - I had mentioned this to my gf last time the topic was active on the front page, so today when the guy showed up claiming he needed to see our utility bill to ensure we were receiving a green energy rebate, my gf rightly challenged him on it and quickly determined he was with Just Energy.

Unfortunately my girlfriend signed up with them yesterday. I didn't like the sound of it so I came to CalgaryPuck for some information/advice. Has anyone here signed up with them and then cancelled right after? What was the process like?

We will certainly be terminating the contract ASAP...they are closed today but we will call tomorrow. Apparently we have 10 business days or something about 45 days after receiving our first bill to get out of the contract however I want to do it IMMEDIATLEY. I am pissed off.

Thanks guys.

Fair Trading Act of Alberta allows for these types of contracts to be cancelled within the first 10 days after signing I believe. Looks like section 27 of the Act covers this.

Quote:
Absolute cancellation right 27
A consumer may, without any reason, cancel a direct sales contract at any time from the date the sales contract is entered into until, subject to the regulations, 10 days after the consumer receives a copy of the written sales contract.

Correct, you have ten days to end the contact. So get on it now. These guys are total scammers, and it's very unlikely there will be any savings to the customer.

Had them in Chaparral too. Very sketchy lot - 3 of them - not dressed well.
I immediately stepped out on my front steps and shut my door behind me. They looked puzzled by that. I find a quick "I don't ever deal with anyone that comes to my door. Period. Enjoy the rest of your day" is quite effective. Worked again with this group.

Yeah the set today was definitely a step down in presentability from the folks they've used in the past. Scrubbier clothes, less articulate, labour crunch effecting the door-to-door scams as well?

The company that employees these kids is located in my office building, some of the conversations I have heard on the elevator make me shake my head. Best one was one of these geniuses talking about going to visit his parol officer.

One other wizard got in a heated exchanged with a fed ex guy, because the genius was right at the elevator door pushing his way on, as others were getting off.

I'd be scared if i was some type of mid-level manager TA DE and my living depended on these wizards.......
