People are saying that goalies are easy to aquire once they develop. I disagree with this. What teams have been successful with this strategy?

Rask, traded for when he was still a prospect
Lunquist, drafted by rangers
Quick, drafted by LA also drafted bernier high and were able to keep the better one
Price, drafted by Montreal
Chicago, drafted both Niemi and Crawford.

Good goalies dont get moved. You can get prospects that are further along in their development but then their ceilings arent as high. Just because we go Kipper for a 2nd doesnt mean that it is easy to do.

Rask falls onto the "do not draft goalies" side of the equation.

Not really, he was aquired while he was still a prospect.

The logic of Dont draft goalies I assume is that you can aquire them once they are more developed. Rask was aquired a year after the draft with only slightly more info than his draft year. If you dont like drafting a goalie who is still developing why would you support trading for one who is just 1 year further along in his development.

Haven't read all the thread yet, but a couple comments:

1) anyone who says we're stocked in net is wrong - we basically have 3 real prospects, Ramo, Ortio and Gillies (we'll see if there's anything there in Roy). We don't even have enough to fill our 4 roster spots, never mind having more in the pipeline. We should have at least 5 or 6. I am as big a fan of Gillies as anyone here, but the thing with goalies is never know - it's a numbers game.

2) was it early to pick him? Maybe. But obviously they felt it was an area of concern (agreed) and they wanted to get their guy

3) Demko was rated #1, but I have seen a lot of BC and personally I am not a fan - so glad they didn't take Demko. Great team in front of him and always thought he was weak when they needed him most

Talked to a guy who coaches in the Quebec league. He said this goalie is really good and it's a great pick for the flames.

I've always thought Fucale was a bit overrated due to the team he had playing in front of him.

This is a great pick. The Flames knew which goaltender they wanted and they could feel the run on goaltenders could start soon. They made the pick and the run did indeed start. Good drafting IMO. I'll echo Root's assessment. Demko just never did much for me in all the times I watched him. He got to play behind the best team in college hockey and did nothing but stop pucks. He never made any saves, he just stopped pucks. I like guys that can make saves and McDonald, by reports, is that type of goaltender. Good pick even if we passed over a player or two I thought may have filled holes elsewhere.

besides everyone is so worried about a D-man? none of these guys are gonna be playing next season anyway
I wasn't concerned with dmen playing next season but there were some nice propspects on the board and our d prospects are pretty weak. Would have been nice to have another name besides Wotherspoon. Goalie is fine just would have preferred a d. Hopefully this guy makes Treliving look like a genius. Says he was second ranked goalie as well though so fans will definitely be watching Demkos career closely.

Oh so he's not a goalie but is food. Is Feater still hanging around?

Was he talking about Mcdonald or McDonalds?

Not McDonalds, because McDonalds isn't really food.

I think with this discussion both sides are right. On one hand we seem to be solid enough at finding goalies but on the other hand #34 is almost a first rounder and it has been proven that the uncertainty with goalies is significantly higher

But as a personal pet peeve i hate goalies that catch right. They suck to play against I find

That's not a particularly compelling line of argument. Of all the elite goalies in the league how many were drafted and developed by the team's they play for currently? My guess is, alot.

I like him more than Fucale. Love size in goalies and McDonald is wayyyyy bigger. If we just keep taking the best 6'4+ goalie every draft or two we'll be bound to get a great one. This was my fav goalie in the draft.

If there's a few things I've learned from CP in the last few years is

1) most posters on here know jack squat about players picked after 15, but everyone pretends they do.

2) when most posters are mad about a pick, generally it's a good pick.

Me too. Had a feeling he'd be the first goalie selected. Just didn't think it would be us!

As always with goalies I don't think we'll see much of him until about 2019...

I wanted Cornel thinking McKeown would be long gone.

Time will tell, Cornel probably won't turn into much now that he's in the sabres system.
