Having 3 goalie prospects is far from stockpiling.

I loved this kid at the top prospect game. He looked great, and made some outstanding saves. I'm personally thrilled we got him. I will always lament some of the Dman prospects we could have gotten at 34 as well, but that doesn't dampen my feelings about McDonald.

A bunch of goalies went in the span of a few picks. Glad we took the best one according to the scouts, I'm not about to start critiquing a player I know nothing about.

You're not?
You should probably log out of Calgarypuck then, we have no need for this type of rational draft day thinking.

We nabbed the top ranked player with our first pick and top ranked goalie with our second... nice!

He went from the #7 ranked North American goalie at the midway point to the #2 in the final rankings by CSS, so his trajectory is in the right direction.

I thought this was interesting and quite a compliment:
Quote:
His goalie coach, Brad MacCharles of Empire Goaltending, puts McDonald in the same category as NHL stars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon.
“The fact that we have guys like Sid and Nate and now Mason, it's really exciting,” he said.

Flames will no doubt be relieved to learn that I am starting to warm to this choice. Crisis averted.

I like this pick. I'm not in love with any of our goalie prospects. This guy has great potential.

Given the run on goalies after our pic it was an astute choice if we wanted one of the top goalies in the draft. Mostly I dont like it because its boring watching goalies develop. I trust our scouts though given the last few years so I can get behind the pic. I liked a few of the guys who came off the board just before we picked

I'm pretty upset, goalies shouldn't go in the first 2 rounds. Especially when we have Gillies and Ortio. And we passed on Dougherty, Cornel, McKeown, MacInnis

Craig Button's list has MacDonald at 38 and the highest ranked Goalie....
Flames pick MacDonald at 34 and the first goalie in the draft....

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how he does this year without Gaudreau and Arnold controlling the puck for half the game. His best games were the ones where he had a 2 or 3 goal lead by the midway mark of the first.
No team likely saw Demko play more games this year than the Flames. I think we'll be happy watching Johnny light him up for years to come.
I have no opinion of McDonald, but I keep hearing how the Masons rule the world, so I hope that's true.

I would rather have McDonald than Demko. I thought Mason would be the 1st goalie taken in the draft after I read a few reports.
Here's what Future Considerations had to say about him (absolutely nailed his draft position! Kudos guys):
Quote:
Draft position: 33
MASON MCDONALD
POSITION: Goaltender
CATCHES: Right
TEAM: Charlottetown (QMJHL) BORN: April 23, 1996
VITALS: 6’-4” / 185 Lbs
STATS: 29 GP 3.44 GAA .900 SP 0 SO
SCOUTING REPORT: A composed, massive butterfly stopper who is one part blocker and one part reflex stopper. Very calm and cool handling lots of shots and making saves look ef- fortless. Reads the play extremely well and get his big frame in front of shots. Has a very good glove hand that can steal a goal away in a flash. Cuts down angles well and plays an aggressive game, coming out to challenge shooters regularly. He is an explosive skater and can just fly post to post. Closes himself off well and gives shooters very little holes to shoot at. Impressive rebound control for such a young stopper as he just smothers puck into his arms and chest, and under his pads. Continued to “grow into his frame” all season – looked athletic and poised with better limb control in movement as the season progressed. Tracks pucks well. Puck movement is aggressive and impressive as he helps out the defensemen a lot. Really sewed up his status as the second-best option in the net and closed the gap on Demko with his performance at the U18s.
NHL POTENTIAL: Starting NHL Goaltender

The second round is where you draft good goalies these days. Would have preferred using COL's second, but if he was the best goalie in the group ( Demko?), he won't last another 20 picks.

Also, Thatcher? I think studies have shown that you cannot have the name Thatcher and not be a dink.

6 goalies still went in the first 61 picks though.

Goalies, no matter what round are always a coin flip. We need some restocking and at least it wasn't in round 1. Those 1st run goalie picks...I mean gambles, piss me off.
