So awesome to have guys like Monahan and Bennett as the core of this team going forward... Not just because of their skill but because of their character. We've seen the value in it and how not having it leads to players like hall and yakupov.

Not too shabby at all. That's some legitimate youthful depth right there.

Seriously, what is with people forgetting Gaudreau today. Even with Bennett he is probably our top prospect.
Also Poirier and Klimchuk..

Buffalo couldn't even get the whole "tank for #1" thing right...you had to know they would screw this up too

He is our highest draft draft pick ever (well, since the team moved to Calgary anyways) so there is no reason why statements like these shouldn't be literally true.

There's a theory that NHL teams need consistency. One system that you stick to. One style of play and guys who fit into it.
I prefer adaptability. If the peg doesn't fit the hole, use a different peg, not a bigger hammer. Multiple systems that you can switch between if an opponent figures you out. Different types of players who can give your opponents different problems.
With that perspective, a Monahan and a Bennett might be better than two Monahans, or even two Bennetts.

It's been a long day..... But good. Thou shalt never forget the Gaudfather.
Been thinking about this tonight but my overall top 10 ranking of our prospect pool as of today (excluding anyone who has played more than an NHL season) would be something like:
1. Gaudreau
2. Bennett
3. Monahan
4. Baertschi
5. Poirier
6. Ortio
7. Gilles
8. Granlund
9. Klimchuk
10. Wotherspoon/Sieloff

I'd agree with Yakupov but I'd take Hall any day of the week.

Hall may be a PPG guy but at the end of the day he still doesn't help the team win. He'll score a hat trick and still be on the ice for four goals against.
Bennett may not end up producing like him, but he may be the better all around player, and one you win with.

The look on Tod Buttons face when Sam Bennett makes me think he got his guy. Hope tomorrow continues to be great for Flames fan!

Zero disappointment on my end. I figured the Flames would take Bennett, but I was kinda hoping they'd grab Ritchie. Still fired up about the pick. I was really hoping we'd grab another top 10 but that is pretty hard to do.
Let's see him pack on a few pounds of muscle. 1-2 punch of Bennett and Monahan makes me drool.

You're right, a part of it is that it's our highest pick ever.
The bigger piece for me is that they made the right pick and we got a guy who was as good as the guy who went 1st overall in my opinion. The temptation was there to take a poorer player who was a better fighter.
For me there were 3 guys who were neck and neck for 1st overall and to see the flames land one is kind of surreal. I liked Draitsaitl too, but for me not in the same class as the top 3, the oilers only took him because they now have to be size obsessed. He is a very good player but too poor of a skater to be in the same class as the other 3. The Oilers poor team building decisions jus keep paying off.

If Bennett pushes enough to warrant a spot in the fall, I hope they don't deny him. But conversely, if he appears to be lacking strength and maturity at camp and looks like he needs more time, I hope they don't try to appease the fans and allow him to take another year for development.
I need one of Gaudreau/Bennett to make the team this fall in order to up my excitement from last season (which admittedly wavered at times). My money is on Johnny boy. If neither, then I hope it's at least someone like Sven or Granlund. Want to see another injection of youth and skill.
