Worth the gamble I think purely in terms of future minutes played as we are going to have an elite d-man for a few years on a team no where near winning a championship.

We may not be winning the cup this year, but I think this team is going to surprise a LOT of people. Trading Gio unless the return is huge sounds to me like Oiler Plan 1.
You still have to Field a team.
You still need Leadership.
Still have to reach the cap floor, not to mention your pretty much throwing the coaching staff under the bus giving them a team that has little to no real experience, or go to guys.
Also were not talking about a top ten that has the scouts drooling, were talking about projects in the 2-5 year range. Backlund is just getting rolling and I don't see fans being all that impressed if they think that his development is out of the ordinary.

Calm down folks, I think we get their 3rd and they get PIT 3rd in return for getting Ward. We basically bump our second 3rd round pick up to take his contract is what I am guessing.

Underrated by you apparently. Total package. Great Work ethic, physical, good puck mover, good point shot, blocks shots, tremendous leader. Basically the perfect role model for our kids and it would be near impossible to replace him. You need to keep some good players to teach your kids and shelter them, not sure why you don't seem to understand that concept.

Relax buddy. One I didn't say anything about his value. Two I didn't even say trade him. Just hearing people say he's worth 1st overall plus a bunch more I don't agree. That's my opinion. No need to get all emotional.

Even if it is just bumping up into the 3rd round a bit, isn't that a hefty price to pay for it? Can't imagine ownership would be happy taking on a huge contract just to move up a little in the same round. But hey, if they're cool with it I'm #1 fan of this trade.

on top of all that, gio has less of a cap hit than nikitin over the next 2 seasons.
let that sink in for a bit.

Take it with a grain of salt, dude is a radio personality for TSN1200 in Ottawa that has also said Chicago is clearing cap space for Stastny, and that Spezza could land in Florida or Dallas.
Anything that isn't Senators talk from him is most likely pure speculation

I don't know how you can possibly argue that.
Flames finished 27th in the league last year in a season where Giordano was a Norris nominee.
Scott Stevens wouldnt get this team in the top 2/3rds of the league.
With or without Giordano, next year is going to be painful. I believe his impact will be negligible in the final standings. If we can agree this is true, then the sole basis for keeping him is for his team contributions away from the ice.
Since iginla left, there has been no place holder for the title of 'amazing leader' thst the fanbase would trot out to soften the blow of lacklustre results, so now it's been bestowed on Giordano by default because he is the captain. Well, I simply don't buy the fairytale boogeyman of the oilers up north and their lack of 'leadership'. That's the ultimate fan argumentative point, an ubquantifiable characteristic applied to players who are likeable and/or have been put in a traditional leadership role.
If selling high on a 31-when-the-season-starts Giordano gives you an opportunnity to add significant futures to your newly rebuilding roster, you take it and run. A trade involving the first overall pick while retaining the 4th meets that criteria, as does any other trade that involves a high 1st and top tier prospect.
I feel like I am channeling Peter12 here but the sentimentality and nostalgia are too much sometimes.
This is like last year, what exactly are you preserving by keeping a guy with high value on a terrible team that won't compete until that guy has low value?
What does that get you? 26th? Maybe?
No thanks, I'll take another Monahan please.

I definitely see your point, but I think Gio setting the example with his work ethic and leadership, showing the young guys the right way to play the game is fairly important too. Besides that, one could argue that he's a top 10 Dman in the game right now and in a couple years when the Flames could be on the upswing again, he'll only be 32/33 which isn't that old in this age of super conditioning.

Gio is unlikely to repeat his sucess from last year, fans would like to believe his value is up there with the top defensemqn in the league but anyone trading for him wont place a career year as his value. We should not trade him until seeing if he can repeat his year and increase his value. If he e tends his contract good if not trade him this team will not be good by the time he is declining.

If taking Cam Ward gets us the 7th overall and costs a late 2nd, IMO that's a win.
Canes lose an albatross contract, Flames get closer to the cap floor.
Flames draft Bennet and Ritchie/Virtanen.
Wow.
