This is actually better than what was being offered at the deadline according to Duhatschek. Love it when this stuff comes out in the wash:
The Ducks had previously made a pitch for Kesler at the trading deadline, but were only prepared to give up second-rounders and prospect Devante Smith-Pelly.

Anaheim probably offered up Etem but Vancouver wanted a little more experience at the Center position. This trade gives them the pieces to trade up to 1st potentially. If they take Reinhart then Van will have Reihart, Horvat, and Bonino as their centers. Etem would be redundant as the 3rd young center with limited experience.
I think if Kesler didn't handicap them, the bidding war may have allowed Van to acquire the 10th pick over 24. But this is the hand we've been dealt with. I hope they realize trading Kesler means it's finally time to rebuild.

I would think one of Horvat or Bonino would be part of the package it would take to get Reinhart. 24 + 6 =/= 1 IMO

thats kinda my point, if you are rebuilding why trade for a guy 3 years younger than Kesler. By the time Van is competitive Bonino will be older than Kesler is now.
And Van isn't moving up to #1 with these pieces

But the best news is that we are a worse team without Kesler. Since Vancouver can't compete with the best in the West anyways, it would be wise to tank for McDavid.

Yeah, in one of those games he was arguably the best defender on the ice for the Ducks, in the other, he was awful and got benched. This is a running problem of inconsistency with Sbisa.
However, last year is a hard one to judge because of his injury problems. He was inconsistent but that could be attributed to not getting a chance to hit stride... Somewhat funny though that I can think of another guy to whom that comment applies to, and the Canucks just bought him out.

its just funny, Kesler is an old broken down bum at 29 who may never walk again
Sbisa is 24 already has had more injury problems than Kesler
Bonino is 26 similar injury history to Kesler
not fair to judge them

I don't really think Kesler is broken down... I think he's pretty much what we've seen recently. Meanwhile, I don't think anyone's going to argue that Sbisa is anything other than a big injury risk. The difference is that it's hard to tell whether he's any good when he IS in the lineup because the injuries have clouded that. No doubt that Kesler, when healthy, is a great player.
Does Bonino really have a similar injury history in terms of multiple shoulder surgeries?

There was a post a few pages back, but the Canucks did want more picks and prospects back, but finally relented to the deal that was made.
Ducks held all the cards

Obviously wanted DSP, Etem, Vatanen and 10th, but Kesler put them in a tough spot and they got what they could for him.

Fairly even trade for both teams, IMO. Probably a win for the canucks since they remove some cancer from their dressing room.

He has had multiple injuries, considering he has only played one full season in the NHL its tough to guage

Sbisa has been given up on more times than I can count. Bonino is going to have to try and score on a team led by two dying Swedes rather than two of the top offensive players in the game. But, the Canucks got rid of Kesler and got a first rounder.
Probably a mild win for Vancouver, even if the return doesn't match the hyper-inflated expectations the fanbase had going in.

Ducks held all the cards because Vancouver allowed it to be that way
I hope the Flames days of being pushed around by players are over with the current management. Kesler is under contract for two seasons, I would have played hard ball with the guy not say "yes sir, we will trade you to one of those two teams that will kick our asses all year" thats just me though
if he was a pending UFA its different

Kesler has missed 86 games in the last 5 years, and it isnt all broken fingers, stubbed toes and waffle-related injuries, hes injured his shoulder, his hip and his knee.
He might have 7 years left in the league, but not as a reliable 2 way centre and its likely that his most productive years, as well as his best earning years, are behind him.
