A third line center or second line winger and a potential depth player probably doesn't get you a potential 1st line player, no.
And that's the thing. Someone called my propositions ridiculous, but I don't see a team like NYI considering much less.

Falling in love with your own players is a great way to stay mediocre.
No one wants to give Backlund away - but if it's in the name of getting better, so be it.

I doubt Backlund is going to be traded anyways. Didn't Treliving go out of his way to contact him and tell him that after the false Spezza rumor?

First attempt at a proposal. Given the Reinhart connection, anyone think that NYI would bite on something like Wideman (%50 retained) / Smid / Russell + Reinhart + 2nd for 5th?
Flames take Sams/Leon + Richie.

But like, why develop your prospect in to quality NHLers just to trade them while they're still young?

Johnny is an exception. Total mancrush on that little dude, I'll kick Treliving in the knees if he trades Johhny

Trading him for something of value is hardly "sending him packing."
It's nice that he had a goo season last year but he has a career high of 39 points and is weak of FO's. He should hardly be untouchable.

Edmonton and Winnipeg are exhibits A & B of teams that have been far too reluctant to move on from some of their top prospects and it shows as the teams wallow in mediocrity or worse. Teams simply aren't going to give you great players or assets for your junk and when things aren't working you need to eventually make a big change or two.

To hopefully improve your team? Isn't that why most teams make trades?

Because if you believe he won't be part of you becoming a contender, you've still developed an asset.
I love Backlund, but if he's in a package to acquire another top 10 - it makes sense. You have to give something up to get something back. I personally don't think Backlund will ever be more than a 3rd line center on a championship quality team. So if you can use him to help acquire a player you think could be a 2nd line player on a championship team? You do it.

Because we are in year 2 of a rebuild with all signs pointing to drafting a center to be top 2 with the 4th pick, Monahan as a long term center and Stajan with a 4 year deal. Also solid prospects like Granlund, Reinhart, Knight, Arnold coming up. Backlund is cheap now and might have really good value because of his low cap hit and steps forward. No one wants to give him away but in terms of improving the team he is an intriguing asset.
Also I think Monahan as a 2 way player will start to be exposed to tougher minutes sooner than later. Stajan can also handle himself defensively.

He is a beat writer for Flames who is likely down there covering them so very possible he would get this information.
Not sure how reliable he has been in the past though.

He's not the typical rumour monger so I believe he's probably got a pretty good source on this one. Not really a surprise given how much we know Burke covets Virtanen and Ritchie.

How reliable does anyone have to be to state the obvious.
I imagine every team wants to add a top ten pick to whatever they already have.
The only insight we are given is "big push"

Trading Backlund would be a major mistake. He is finally coming into his own as a complete 2 way player. The exact type of player we should be hoping to add to this team.
Did you people that are labeling him a 3rd line center actually watch him play for the Flames this year or in the worlds?
One step forward, two steps back is not the way to build this team.

It is possible and likely that people think his value is higher than it is, but you sure do like to suggest he is worth next to nothing.
Let's compare those guys:
Sven
24 pts in 51 NHL games
55 pts in 73 AHL games
Armia
0 NHL games
27 pts in 54 AHL games
Miller
10 pts in 56 NHL games
67 pts in 83 AHL games
Sven has shown more at this point. Period.
