Flames have been posting things about the projected top 5 picks all week.

I'm in the camp that believes this was "leaked" to Dean intentionally. It may represent a few things.
1) The Flames actually do want Draisaitl and will move up to ensure that.
2) The Flames are poking the hornet's nest because they know somebody else might want Draisaitl. This "leak" may provide them with some extra information by who calls who and how urgently.
3) The Flames actually want to move up but are misrepresenting who they want.
4) The Flames do want Draisaitl but don't want to move up unless they have to, and hopefully this leak can help them figure out if it's necessary or not (e.g. by gauging Edmonton's reaction).
There's a lot of balls in the air right now. I have no doubt that someone did leak this to Dean, but the question is why. #1 is just too simplistic to be the likely scenario. Some or all of these could be the case.

This is simply speculation by Boomer. Nothing to get all excited about as if anyone heard the interview with Conroy it really sounds like the Flames are happy to stay at #4. Conroy also kept mentioning over and over the top 4 meaning that it sounds like the Flames will pick whichever of the consensus top 4 falls into their lap as the Flames consider them all strong prospects.

Well as people mentioned, Burke said the draft is the time for people to lie.
I don't really know what is true and who is lying, but it's just nice to hear some Calgary rumours finally after listening to Canuck and Oiler rumours the past few days.
If Calgary really has their heart set on a guy and want to move up I am fine with it. Like I said earlier #4 and Hudler for #2 and Stewart and I would be pretty happy with moving up, but I would rather not move Sven or Backlund to do it.

Someone else said it, but I too think this is just a rumor to get the Oilers to waste an asset to move to 1st OA.

Also, I don't want to give up on Sven, especially to only move up 2 spots and acquiring another 2nd round pick. You only trade him for another prospect/NHL player that meets the needs of the Flames.

Every year there's talk of everyone in the top 5 trading picks and moving around. And every year nothing happens.
I'm happy if Calgary overpays to move up two spots, but what would really be the point? The top 4 are all so close anyways.

I said I don't put a lot of faith in Boomer. I actually like his show to be honest, but can't seem to recall a time when he has got a tip or insider information before another media person.
Can you point me to him breaking a story?
|
It is part rumor based on insider information and part speculation.
And he was very clear when he was talking about which was which.
If people are going to judge the guy - then at least listen to what he ACTUALLY said.

if i were a betting man, i'd say the first pick that is traded this draft is the Islanders' pick. After all the rumours, nobody in the top4 is going to move their pick is my guess

The other thing is just because a rumor doesn't come true doesn't mean it wasn't accurate.
Last year Boomer said that Mason Raymond wanted to play for the Flames. The Flames didn't sign him. Does that mean that Boomer's info was false.
Not at all.

Again these draft day trades to move up in the top 5 rarely happen and I personally don't expect the order of the top 5 to change tomorrow. As I have aged and seen draft after draft where all these rumours add up to nothing but internet traffic at websites with paid advertisements. Time for some fans to really take a look at how often the top 5 order changes. It's very, very seldom and that's not going to change.

Ritchie & DalColle/Virtannen methinks.
To me guys you consider in the mix if you're at #5, but a step down from the others.

Reinhart and likely Draisaitl will both play in the NHL next season.
Why send a guy that just had 100+ pts in 60ish games back into the junior leagues? They are both big, strong and smart enough to play NHL hockey now and it would be an absolute waste of time for them to go back to the WHL.
Neither of those develop at all in juniors again next year.

Fair enough. If that happened though Burke would have to change his "stance" on keeping young guys up in their first year, heh. (He's said Monahan was the exception to his rule)

But it's not Burke's decision. It's Treliving's.

Either the Flames don't want to be stuck with Bennett, or they really want one of Ekblad or Reinhart.
Either way, I don't see a trade happening until after Florida makes their pick (unless Buffalo truly doesn't care who they get and are content with adding a second asset along with someone from the top 4).
|
I dunno, lately I think Reinhart might be the most likely to fall to 4. It's a bit of a toss up between Reinhart and Bennett. Buffalo may be the key team in all this.

Just because they play an "NHL game" in junior does not mean it will carry over to the NHL. If they won't be able to come in and play top 6 minutes and PP time there is no point in burning a year on their contract and slowing their development.
AHL isn't an option, so if they can't step in and play their game at the NHL level they should be sent back to junior. It doesn't matter what they did last year in junior, it's about how they play in camp/preseason/first few games in the NHL.

Everyone needs to stop making trade scenarios with Sven. Why the hell has everyone given up on him and want to trade him? I don't get it.
