Yeah, but at the time Marty was looking like one of those guys who dominates the AHL, but can't put it together at the NHL level.
After 1999-2000 St. Louis' stats were
AHL: 95gp 48g 56a 104p
NHL: 69gp 4g 16a 20p
I wasn't paying as close attention to the Flames back in 2000 as I do now, and I'd have been upset at getting rid of someone who could produce like that in the minors, but it wasn't like he wasn't given a shot.

Really don't think Burke says anything wrong here, especially after the Feaster era of over hyping everything some tempered expectations are what a rebuilding team needs.
Besides he says if anyone is going to make it at his size its going to be Johnny

And the man who did that is now being paid to evaluate talent.

You have to remember Martin St. Louis once joining the lighting was still getting roughly 2 minutes a game. It took time and a lot of hard work till he was able to earn the ice time and gain the confidence to succeed like he has.
The Flames didn't give up on St. Louis, even he credited the Flames back them for that.
Martin is an exception, what can happen with hard work and always believing in yourself, and not the rule that a small man can play in a big mans game.

I speculate it is because Burke enjoys the truculent big player loving reputation that he has. Stating the obvious now and then keeps the image in place.

That's pretty much what it comes across as to me, playing a character.

But imo he is a top 3 offensive prospect in the nhl, and the return would have to reflect his potential. Imo he has answered every questions posed of him at every level and its hard to believe he won't at the nhl too. Seems almost a certainty he'll be a ronning calibre player but his upside maybe even mullen level.
I know its possible he won't ever crack the nhl, but i just don't see how that happens. Barring injuries, at worst he will be an nhl player fondly remembered by fans, at best his jersey is retired some day.

Apparently you watched the video
Conroy looks like a kid in a candy store
Burke his usual gruff, snarly self
This is Flames approved, and for a reason
Tempering expectations
David Steckel

The NHL is a big jump. Everyone is concerned he will get wiped and hurt really bad. This is a valid concern. Not to temper his talent, skill to date, it's something that has been repeated by his parents, burke, and everyone else.
While I personally love the hitting, the brutality within reason, the fighting within reason. The reason is never the intent to hurt or injure another player, but does happen accidentally. I think as a flames fan we want space for this kid and the newer kinder league to kick in, even though I don't want that as a fan at this point. I know I am a bad person. Lol.

Probably because most of the questions Burke gets asked about him have to do with his size, what do you expect him to say?
How about this
Reporter: "We know you are looking for big players that are hard to play against, how does Johnny G fit into those plans"
Burke: "He plays like he's 6'4""

2011
Drafted from USHL at 5'6" 145lbs.
"What a waste of a 4th round pick, will never be able to hold his own against grown men in college hockey."
2012
Puts up PPG numbers as a freshmen.
"Okay, but getting ONLY a point per game in the NCAA isn't that great, and he's still too small."
2013
Puts up 1.46 PPG as a sophomore.
"Yeah that's pretty good, but NCAA is vastly inferior to the CHL, he won't be able to hold his own against the top CHL players."
World Juniors 2013
5th in tournament scoring, tops on his gold medal winning team.
2014
Dominates college hockey, winning the Hobey Baker with 2.0 PPG.
"Okay but we'll see how he gets man-handled by full grown, legit NHL players."
WHC 2014
10 points in 8 games, 2nd on his team only to Seth Jones and ahead of every single Canadian, as well as other notable NHLers such as Mikael Backlund, Justin Abdelkader, Tomas Hertl, Jaromir Jagr, Tomas Tatar, etc.
Seems like so far he's made a career out of proving people wrong.

No. General naysayers. Im too lazy to go back and look through old threads to find exact quotes, but gives you the general idea of a minority of Debbie Downers (* cough cough ... Moon ... cough).

I could give a flying ###### about Hull. He was a lazy fatso when Flames traded him.
Kinda like Savard.
Flames are going to be the class of the league in a few years when it comes to ripening players (of all shapes and sizes). The cupboards will be full. There will be tons of competition for roster spots. I know this because the Flames have been that in the past. They can do it again.
Flames have patiently developed JG. No pressure, finish school, downplay significance. I bet unless he dominates training camp, he will go to AHL to apply maximum ownage on that league until mid season trades or deadline deals.
|
While agree with your takes on Savard and Hull being lazy and fat, this is the first I've heard about St. Louis being lazy which you say in an earlier post. I didn't see him as lazy at all, just stuck on the 3rd and 4th lines by Brian and playing with cement heads while learning how to play defence, so he didn't get to pad his stats.

Couldn't agree more, don't even care who the Flames pick at 4 as long as they come to development camp and impress. Then we can get back to more important things, like recognizing that Edmonton is no good.

Yes, Craig Button is TSN's "Director of Scouting."
Tod Button is the Calgary Flames Director of Amateur Scouting.

Somebody could hear Burke saying "Gaudreau scored a goal in his first NHL game" and automatically people assume Burke hates Gaudreau because he didn't get a hattrick, start a fight, and go on a date with Burke's daughter.
