Won't even get that far this is an early retirement contract. No intention of playing the full term.
No recapture penalties, no 35+ year old contract that will count against the cap no matter what.

I'm surprised how few like this deal. Seems like a great deal for the Kings to me.
They're obviously in win now mode, and a low AAV of 4.9 will help them try to get to a third cup over the next 2 or 3 years. After that, they can probably eat 1M off the contract and AAV and move him to another team if he isn't as affective anymore. Or, as a few have mentioned, he could retire or if injuries catch up to him just ride out the deal on LTIR.
There are still plenty of loopholes in the CBA and this contract will try to use lots of them.
Another way to look at it... would you rather have Boland at 5+ for a similar term? Vanek at 7+? He fit perfectly into their team and was a huge contributor to the cup win. Darryl said he was the key to the cup shortly after they won. Lombardi doesn't make many mistakes, and I'm sure he has an exit strategy for this contract before it becomes a burden.

First Greene to 4 years then Gaborik for 7. Lombardi got some attachment issues lol.

Of course the next CBA will have compliance buy outs. I'm sure teams knew there would be compliance buyouts long before the last CBA was signed.
It's not like the PA wants to stop them, as it's great for their players. It gets money into their hands that is outside the 50% of HRR. It's a sneaky concession to the big market teams that we'll see again and again in all capped leagues in my opinion.

I really like this signing for LA. He's cheap for the next 3 years at least and 5 million won't be terrible after that.

Do we know the contract structure yet?
If it's front loaded then there would be recapture penalties. If it isn't front loaded then why would he retire early when he's making almost 5M per year?

So he can retire at any point in the contract without penalty to the cap, and/or they could buy him out after age 35 at any time without it counting against the cap?
Outstanding deal all round then

Someone had stated before that the buyouts did count towards the player split of HRR.

There are no recapture penalties for contracts signed under the new CBA.
LeBrun already tweeted he expected the final year of the contract to be the minimum value allowed by the new front loading rules.

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Will have to see yr-by-yr breakdown of Gaborik deal but IF he decides to walk away from any remaining yrs, there are no cap hits/penalties.

If they buy him out it will count against the cap.
What I meant is that this contract comes in effect before Gaborik turns 35 years old.
under the cba if a player's multi-year contract comes in effect after they turn 35, the contract will fully count against the cap regardless if the player retires or is buried in the minors

Good deal IMO.

Well, then I suppose it's lucky for Gaborik and the Kings, that there is no one working at "the insurance company" that has as much insight as some randon internet poster.

This is effectively a 4 or 5 year contract. A little long, but not too unreasonable given the caphit.

Not much incentive to retire early if he would still be getting 3.5M per year.

Cammy must be happy he didn't sign with us early. Looks like he's about to get paid.

The Kings better hope he retires early and stays relatively injury-free (which is highly doubtful). Good chance it's a buy-out candidate in 3 years.

I doubt a 37 year old walks away from 7 more million dollars, but I guess we'll see. The landscape can change so much between now and then

The cap is projected to continue to rise. Say it's at $80M 5 years down the road and Gaborik wants to keep playing. His contract will eat up a hair over 6% of the team cap. That's not bad at all for the Kings.
