First Line Centre

I would have no issue giving Stasny a 5-6 year deal for 6-7 million per year. He's got the right skillset, experience, age and he's constantly on team USA (so I assume Burke thinks highly of him).
Also allows our center prospects to develop without being thrown to the wolves (IE - Oilers style). Also keeps Backlund (whom I think highly of) on his toes and constantly pushing to improve or else he becomes replaceable and traded.
Will it happen? Probably not unless the Flames trade Backlund or are willing to have Stajan as an expensive 4th line center.

Stastny will get similar or better offers from teams better than the flames.
They will not add any big fish via UFA this summer

Shawn Thornton was reportedly spotted at Logan International Airport getting on a flight to Philly.
Going to be meeting with teams' hockey ops departments that are there for the draft.

Well TOR dug their own grave when they gave Clarkson that ridiculous deal. Now every player for the Leafs will be measuring their contracts up to his. Not that I care.

I really hope the Flames make a very strong pitch on Statsny.

hmm, if you want statsny, who do you want not on the flames depth chart at center:
backlund
monahan
stajan
4th pick this year, assuming they are a viable NHL option come camp
i'm hoping the flames make these type of plunges to NHL ready players next season, and this year continue the "marinating mode" to let the prospects develop further, and giving guys like m. reinhart/knight/granlund a shot. getting a top 5 pick in 2015 seems like the best case scenario this season for the franchise.

The silly season is coming. The time of year where NHL GM's willingly hand out the worst contracts in the league for short term gains in hopes by the time the next CBA comes around they will be bailed out by another round of compliance buyouts.

I don't. By the time this team is competitive again a contract like the one Stastny will command will be a huge boat anchor around this team's neck. Do not want.
I would rather see short term deals offered to players who can plug holes in the lineup, with a focus on building through the draft. Trying to sign the big fish every year is how you end up a perennial bubble team like we used to be.

Thank you for that insight. Seeing how you can predict the future with such certainty can you tell us who we will draft on Friday, how good Gaudreau will really be, and just for s***s and giggles you can give me the winning lottomax numbers for this Friday as well. Thanks.

You don't need to be able to predict the future to know that. Unless the Flames overpay they aren't going to get any of the big name free agents.

Wouldn't hurt my feelings if the Flames signed Stastny or Niskanen, but at the same time it won't hurt my feelings for the Flames not to land any big name UFA's. Those contracts usually end up being complete anchors down the road.

Yet the Flames are in a position that they can overpay. If a player prefers the payday to the contender the Flames are easily in the mix to sign a big name UFA.

Focus is always on overpaying, which as this point is entirely irrelevant.
Term is all that matters - so that any contract does not handcuff the team when they are ready to be competitive.

Is it just me that thinks purposely overpaying for UFAs is stupid? Most UFA contracts in general are terrible, but there are people who think it's a good idea to overpay?
Ugh. Might as well give them all full a full NMC as well.

No... but it's a good idea to get your guy for the term you want him for.
So Gaborik will be had for a discount by the Kings compared to what he would make elsewhere - but if a team thinks he the guy to make the difference for them, and they can fit him into the cap, you definitely consider the overpay.
Works the same everywhere else. The same welder is worth 70% more in Ft. Mac than he is in Calgary. You overpay because you have to, not because you want to.
