Well, now that he is an Oiler I hope he continues to regress and plays like an AHL scrub for two years.

Any UFA signing with the Oilers are going to be overpaid. No surprises there.
Leaving the no goodness aside, Edmonton isn't the most enticing location to live for NHL'ers. It's Edmonton.
Bringing the no goodness back into it, the Oilers are career killers. The franchise chases countless players out of the organization, whether it be through FA or bolting to the KHL, annually. It's Edmonton.
Good luck Nikitin.

Not a bad deal for the Oilers. Short term deal that they paid a small premium for. As much as I hate the Oilers, there isn't much to mock on this one.

In my opinion, he is a good defenseman. He is not offensive per se, but he can get pucks through traffic. He also hits pretty hard and is reasonably good defensively.
He is definitely a top 4 on Edmonton as of their roster right now.

They added an NHL player for a 5th (which is meaningless for their scouting staff) so I guess it is a good deal for them (cap hit aside).

what a shame ... I liked Nikitin until today. 4.5 is pretty steep though, but the Oilers need every help on the blueline they can get.

Using my crystal ball, I will now predict the future:
Summer of 2016:
"Nikita Nikitin has signed a deal in the KHL"

Hey look, Oilers just gave 4.5 million to another bottom pairing defenseman. MacT wanted to top the Ference contract.
Eventually, they're going to stumble across a good defenseman from within the organization (it's just a statistic inevitability) and what are they going to do when he needs a raise and they've got Ference, Nikitin and Schultz eating up their cap space on defense... They won't be able to give him a bridge contract, which is also their fault. Haha.

not a bad deal, the issue here is that you could argue that he is the #1 or #2 dman on the oiler NHL level depth chart as of now. Good dman, but will be a repeated error by playing a guy in the wrong spot and setting him up to fail if they don't address the top layer on that depth chart.

Don't understand this from Nikitin's view. Hitting free agency would have given him similar money with longer term on a better team. Only thing that makes sense is he's pretty much guaranteed to be playing a top 2 role with near infinite ice time. I guess he's confident he'll be able to raise his stock enough to get a huge deal in a couple years with that opportunity.

A good move for the Oilers. Something on the back end is much better than the pile of nothing they had before they signed him. Only 4 more D men to sign.... (Ference still gets a spot)

Money is way too high but term is pretty good.
Nikitin is best as a bottom pairing guy so 4.5 is ridiculous and with the Oilers holes and money committed to others it doesn't make much sense at all, but I guess that is why they are the Oilers.
It would be nice to see the Flames sign a defenseman to a similar type deal but hopefully the guy would be a hell of a lot better than Nikitin.

The Oilers just paid a 5th to outbid every other team that would have sent an offer to him in UFA. Smrt.

The Oilers will pay Nikitin more over the next two seasons than the Flames will pay Giordano. Try and wrap your head around that. No good!

Seems pretty obvious that he wanted a pay day so he could leave back to Russia ASAP.

Hopefully this move helps them improve so they can get to that 9-12 place in the west

He has an NHL contract, he can't sign with the KHL for at least 2 years.
Seems like a good move by the Oilers, I bet the Flames will also have to pay more for UFA type of stuff.....

Solid deal for the Oilers, although Nikitin will by default become their #1 guy. I don't think that will work out too well, but at the same time I would have taken him on this deal for the Flames.

Good deal for the Oilers. Nice move for MacT.
I'm surprised they got him that cheap on 2 years.
The need a couple more though, and they will be hard to find.
And 5 to 6 forwards

Do your really believe an NHL team was willing to match the Oilers contract or offer longer term? I doubt that as any other team could have done this for the small cost of a 5th round pick and the Oilers were the only team interested. I think some teams would have had interest as a UFA but the offers would have been of the cautious variety. As has been said the Oilers had to overpay to get him.
